I have played it the same way. Declare the charge, LH evade, Impact then conform. FoG normally make it easier to make contact, not harder, so it is within the spirit of the rules.

I would go for Mirliton figures. Who would make better Papal figures than the Italians? Mirliton has a communal range, which suits your wishes nicely, for example C010. Mirliton USA stocks them as well.

You can indeed have more than one allied contingent in an army - you can in fcat have 3 if the list allows :shock:

However, you can only have 1 of each foreign ally unless the list otherwise allows more.

So for example Early Germans would be able to use two allied commanders of the same tribe ...
