Re: Seleucid Silver Shields and Companions unavailable for recruitment

Ok indeed the one each cap is the explanation.

I disbanded them and they became available the next turn in my capital to recruit again.

Makes sense historically. But it could be indicated more clearly in the game IMHO.

Thanks and go on the good work.

Seleucid Silver Shields and Companions unavailable for recruitment

Hello, Could be I missed something but in my Seleucid game Silver Shields and Companions are missing from the capital roster for recruitment. They are in red (unavailable) in many other cities but not in the Capital (Ctecipho, Sittacene) where they should be available because there is a King's Palac...

If I understand Nik and Richard correctly, the individual lists are adjusted to get them to fit with historical opponents. being primarily an historical gamer, I appreciate this. The continuing attempts to lobby for, say, apples, because oranges were treated a certain way misses this point. No amou...

Re: How Much is Enough?

Yes, you can argue that the requirements for thegns were not adhered to, but the Anglo-Danish list is written on the basis that they were. If we are wrong about that, it means that the Anglo-Danish list is wrong, not the Nikephorian Byzantine list. So not much point in labouring the point in this t...

My opponent who has MRR uses the lf in groups of 4. He basically parks them in front of my pike blocks and waits for the pikes to charge. The legionaries then usually get to take on isolated pike blocks and even if they don't win the impact they are in good shape in the melee. Average legionaries a...

Funny, whole discussion reminds of the one we had on the same subject in November... :D Where "Later Crusader" infantry was mentioned as having been granted more flexibility than the Byzantines There clearly seems to be an issue here :!: http://www.slitherine.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8732...

I remember a game in which I was completely outmanoeuvred in the deployment phase and was able, with some screening, to transfer my 4x12 pike bases from center deployment zone to my right deployment zone in just a few turns. As said, simply prevent pikes from 90° turn would have seemed just fine/rea...

I was refering to "Average" pike rather than "Poor"

Against poor pike points difference is even more acute 26 vs. 16 !!

Seeing his experience at the tourney I would never choose Romans either. Armies with poor pike (blocks of 12) fared much better and had better results. At 550 points I would avoid Romans, at 600 and 650 they are better. Poor pikes though are road kill to superior legionaries. OK, the legionaries ar...

Third, should the cav charge home, the D.Sp. (if steady) cancel any lancer POA and, although likely down a POA (for heavier armor) in melee, will have more dice. One BG against one BG is by no means a guaranteed win for the cav. Precisely ! As I said: Shock is even PoA but contemporary cav. is usua...

Thank you all for your comments What I retain from this is - that there seemed to be some room for allowing Byzantine Skutatoi to be armoured for certain "wealthier" periods… - there doesn't seem to be "common" approach to the army lists: some, like Roman armies, are allowed a wi...

Thanks for the quick reply both of you.

Yes I also wondered that later crusader infantry were given the benefice of the doubt.

Nikephorian Skutatoi ?

Hi all !

I was surprised to see that Nikephorian Skutatoi were not allowed as "Armoured". This contradicts everything I have read so far on the subject (general public I confess: osprey  , WRG publ,...)

What is the rationale ?

Thanks Hammy for answering again my questions...

Yes ideed your report sounds promissing.

Agreed ! Lesser quality troops, even armed with spears, are not safe against shock oriented mounted, no problems with that.

Re: AoW versus WRG - thoughts of a long-in-tppth wargamer

WRG gave a reasonably historic feel to a battle but made for slow paced games requiring a lot of book-keeping. I've played Don Featherstone rules, WRG 3rd, 5th, 6th & 7th, DBA, DBM, DBR, Shieldbearer (briefly) Warhammer Fantasy and WAB and can homestly say that I prefer Art of War - it's fast p...

Fun is a very relative notion; for me it's no fun to have to micro-manage whirling light cavalry to optimize enemy flanking... The problem with most sets is that if you do not move/activate the troops they don't do much by themselves (not even filling a gap between two parent units) while in reality...

Cost of supporting ranks ??

I understand that your set will also address those of us who like to play competitions. For this to work properly it is important to have best possible balance in the cost system. In most systems cost of bases is calculated on front rank value, problem is that their support value (from 2nd or 3rd ra...
