Re: Colonial Portuguese – who made this list???
Cheers, Jeffrey. So, it seems that my list is not that awkward after all! :) The Portuguese ally list is quite simple: gun-armed infantry and a couple of light or medium guns. Nothing more was used and nothing more would be requested. The only peculiarity is that in the East Indian Ocean (Bangala, f...

Yes Walter, an Hindu ally would be the best representation (btw, the Sinhalese are not hindu but buddhist, only the Tamil are hindu). To be accurate, in terms of numbers a Portuguese army in Ceylon would comprise 70 or 80% of natives (to say the least), the rest being Portuguese proper. Only in a fe...

Will this list be seen as the official list via an errata ? Or should we plan on facing the published list ? I applaud your efforts Pippo, but wonder if this will be become official outside of Portugal. Thanks! :) As for your question... well, I would like to see this list turned into an official o...

After much study, lots of work and brainstorming, here's the final list for the Portuguese Colonials. It's as historical and accurate as it can be, it´s based upon the best sources available so going further than that it's beyond my knowledge. Since I don't know how to insert a gridline here, I hope...

Can't wait till we see Pippo's version of the Fog(N) Portuguese list ! lol Fog(N) = FoG Naps? I'm sure that list will be historical, at least because there's a lot of information about the Portuguese army of those ages (and even some Osprey books as well). Anyway, I'm also sure this time nobody wil...

No offense to those who are passionate about this army, but who the hell would have thought this particular list would perpetuate this long of a thread? I wouldn't have tought it, believe me! But it’s good to know that a lot of people took interest in this particular discution. Right now I don't ha...

Hi! I’ve been consulting other lists trying to sort out some ideas and I reached to the same conclusion as Jeff did: the best way to classify the Portuguese would have to be Musket* Impact Foot Swordsmen, and for an earlier period, Arquebus (or Crossbow, depending on the date) Impact Foot Swordsmen....

Jeff's contribution pointed to the right direction: instead of comparing the Colonial Portuguese vis a vis unhistorical opponents, we should compare them instead with their historical enemies and see if they a have an edge against these or if they are in disadvantage. So, we have two distinct issues...

The Superior Faldagos should be 0-18, giving you the option of 2 x 8s or 3 x 6s, as 24 is far too many. Although with Jeff's dice, 124 wouldn't be enough ! :D Why do you say that? Far too many? Many other armies surpass that number by ar and large (Spanish, Germans, Sweedish, etc.), and I'm only co...

The list seems an improvement on the existing one. I do have (still) a problem with a wholly armed musket, impact foot classification. The Iroquois can have half a unit musket impact foot swords but this classification for an entire unit is, I believe, unique in the lists. I don't think the Portugu...

... the LH, by forcing the ET to face backwards, will pin-down that unit for some 3 turns in which it will be fired upon. Strikes me as a very dodgy manoeuvre: first the LH must pass a CMT to charge. They then face a - in impact and possibly a -- in melee all against twice as many troops. Likely re...

The main trouble is that the rules are great for the European theatre, but really struggles with the colonial areas. We totally agree upon that. Your list is based on dozens rather than hundreds of battles, over which time things will average themselves out. No list is based on hundreds of battles!...

“The Tupi option of front rank Bow* and rear rank arquebus is wrong, very, very wrong. Makes them far too powerful as they can claim the majority of shooting dice are gunpowder and not have a -2 on death rolls. They should be either all bow* or arquebus*.” - That was my main problem when I did the ...

If avayable, use a combination of these: artillery, a big BG of MF shot, and an expendable BG of LH to charge to the rear. The artillery will cause casualties and morale tests; the MF, posted in the flank, will do the same with its superior firepower; the LH, by forcing the ET to face backwards, wil...
