Bad Hats

Yes, regrettably the bad hats are a misinterpretation of a poor illustration of a rock carving. Much better to use something either more Skythian or Persian in appearnace and spangenhelm or similar for armoured types. Sasanian ones had a particular dished profile when viewed end on. I ended up cutti...

Development Team

As you say, I am a member of the DBM List, the DBMM list, the AncMed list, the TNE list etc etc, but nowhere has the development team been identified. I know of one player in Oz who has been working on testing, as you say under a NDA. I presume there are others, and I know that player also acted as ...

Ian,

just a thought but it might be courteous to advise people via (for example) national organisations, IWF, dbmlist, ancmed list etc about a new rules-set, at the moment the secrecy around it is ridiculous. The fact that even the development team is unknown seems ridiculous.

Attrition.

I found that the recoil mechanism in DBM worked quite well, in that lines would gradually degrade in efficiency and effectiveness requiring more command input (PIPs) to keep in contact, the PIP shortage would then lead to the opponent getting an advantage, and finally winning outright. I don't think...

"A feeling among many wargamers" Who? - this certainly isn't my experience, and I am one of the Australian ancients wargamers association representatives. I am a member of the club that organises the Australian Nationals each year, and I have been playing Ancients Wargames for 30 years. Th...

what's an element

In DBx (the DBM family) of games, an element is a single group of figures, normally between 1-4 based on a standard sized base. Elements are moved either singly or as part of larger groups. The element is used for combat calculation etc. In Boardgaming terms it is a 'piece'. The element represents a...

Numbers

I was talking about my experience here. Where I am on the Australian Ancients Wargames Committee, as well as the IWF Interps Committee for DBM.

Ther UK experience is quite different.

Base Standards

Hi Possum, basically in an element type game, to avoid strange geometry - overlaps etc, there is a requirement that one group of troops line up directly vs opponents. This makes combat calculations easier, allows players to see who outnumbers who etc. Think of it as an enforced hexagin system such t...

% of waragmers who play in competition

This is not my experience over the last 12-15 years, the bulk of Ancients players in Oz do play in competition. Perhaps due to the geographically dispersed nature of Australia, it is very common. Roughly 80-90% of Australian Ancients players play occasionally or frequently in competitions. If you do...

Army Lists

Can you please ensure that where army lists are developed that the same or similar standards are adopted for classification across multiple reviewers/writers. One of my pet peeves with DBx used to be that some lists contained pure speculation - notably things like Roman armoured chariots, experiment...

Army Scale

You should note that the UK standards are not those in use overseas. It is rare to find competition DBx being run at over 400 AP outside of UK Doubles Games. Most competition games fall into the 350-400 AP range. At the suggested scales in DBx this gives armies varying form perhaps 30,000 - 10,000 I...

Base Sizes

Essentially as most ancients players would know, the DBM/DBA sizes are pretty much standard. Shattered Lances uses this system as do all the recent game releases. When you have many (most established) players with 20+ armies, rebasing is just not an option and is a huge barrier. DBMM also includes a...

I shall wait and see with interest. In the clubs etc that I play in DBM is basically buried except as the only agreed competition set for large scale battles. Most people who wuld like to play ancients/medievals are now using other sets, notable DBA campaigns, Shattered Lances and for a number DBMM ...
