Maybe you would have more luck with getting extra cavalry in the Thracian lists. The Massed Peltast unit you are talking about is 33 pts? This is very cheap for a full infantry unit. The fierce light cavalry units are really expensive. I don't like them myself but perhaps okay if you take just a few in your army.

For Strategic Command, I think quite a lot of people recommend one of the base games for beginners. Is it WW1 or WW2? Easier to play, I think.
