Did all that and it still crashed my PC.

No holding Ctr trick didn't work, I tried that twice and it crashed both times after changing the resolution etc..
I'm currently doing as zakblood posted...installing now.

I've owned this game for a while, I do have saved games that I was planning to use for the new ability to use old units from the 2 Japanese campaigns.
