Re: (Greek tactics ?) Fascinating duos

Looks like Attic black-figure pottery ca. 550-480 BC. Some see those duos as an Hoplite (mounted or not) and his hyperetes, a man by whom the hoplite was accompanied when he took the field, and who carried the luggage, the provisions and the shield of the hoplites (Xen. Cyrop. 2.1, § 31) and who se...

Re: (Greek tactics ?) Fascinating duos

Definitely interesting groupings. Do you know what time period the painting are from? They could be depicting Troyan or Persian wars using local and contemporary arms and armors, similarly to how renaissance or early modern art might depict biblical events with people dressed and equipped in the the...

Arrows vs Armour 3

Another set of videos in this series has been released. This time it covers an infantryman-type mixed armor of the mid 15th century and newer arrow types. Perhaps most interestingly, in the main video Tod has 7 longbow hobbyists shooting at the suit of armor from 60, 40 and 20 meters. In terms of st...

Re: Rear attacks on Keil probably need a few adjusts

Personally I lobbied for something a bit more granular than the current Death Star Trench Run required to "flank" a Keil from rear. A significant (~50-100 POA) penalty to Keil's POA against impact and melee when receiving from what is usually a side-flanking attack would have made them a b...

Thanks! While I don't have FoG1 to play the actual scenarios, these little articles often inspire me to try similar battles in FoG2A/M.

Re: Alternative LoS (instead of base game's 20)?

I haven't looked at the code but it could also be possible to make the elevation of the spotter and the terrain and type of the unit being spotted affect the ranges. That could add a lot of new dynamics to the game even if rather gamey.

Re: Mixed Units Bug (Animation On/Off)

The game's engine doesn't support more than one type of model per unit. The mixed archer and some other complex units have been done with animation tricks as a workaround, and I guess turning off the animations restores the unit to its default state (which in this case is the "main" spearm...

Re: Manzikert

I haven't played the epic battle since the DLC was in beta but I took a look at the old beta forum discussion on the subject. The scenario is purposely difficult for the Byzantines and one of the hardest in the game in my experience (there are also a few random factors that may make this scenario a ...

Re: (History) Greek light horse ?

Couple more comments on the latter post. 2) Cavalry were sometimes instructed not to engage in order to play a crucial role in the immediate aftermath of battle : covering the retreat or chasing the routed enemies This is indeed a vital role that any cavalry is capable of executing. During cursades ...

Re: (History) Greek light horse ?

Everyone is of course entitled to his opinions. A couple of things bother me in your reasoning though : 1) your only source is Armies of the Greek and Persian wars (1978) by Richard Bruce Nelson, That was not the point I was trying to make. My overall impression of the Greek cavalry's low performan...

Re: (History) Greek light horse ?

In FoG2 terms, I would prefer a lower quality non-light cavalry for the non-Thessalian (maybe non-Theban/Syracusan) Classical Greek cavalry (unmaneuverable, average, light-spear, 50% swordsmen would be my pitch) instead of the usual light javelin and the non-light light-spear cavalry. To clarify, I'...

Re: (History) Greek light horse ?

My imperssion is that the in-game light cavalry and light-spear armed cavalry are (through most of the game) essentially a representation of one and same type of historical cavalry. Through light and non-light formations they are mechanically assigned to the two extremes of of their role and capabil...

Re: Extend the Drilled and the Undrilled traits to the Cavalry and the Medium Foot?

Irregular Foot mostly represent loosely formed javelin throwing infantry. (In fact they used to be called Javelinmen in the game until some people found that description confusing and persuaded us to change the name to Irregular Foot). Not much need of formation there. And they are surely bad enoug...

Re: Extend the Drilled and the Undrilled traits to the Cavalry and the Medium Foot?

I guess it's pretty unlikely that something this major would be patched in this late in the development but I do like the idea. I wouldn't recommend unmaneuverable as a "default" for the cavalry but there are some that the trait would fit. For example, the Early Cavalry always seemed like ...

Re: v1.5.21 update released - changelog.

Thanks for the update! The new late Teutonic list is really nice. It now feels like an interesting hybrid of German and Polish lists and seems to work nicely against the Polish with Lithuanian allies (not that those wars historically went that great for the Teutons but it seems very sensible for the...

Re: How to utilize Javelins and Cavalry with Javelins effectively?

Yeah, inflicting casualties alone isn't that important. Always try to shoot the same enemy enough to get a cohesion test (held firm, disrupted, fragmented) and once you see a cohesion test, switch to another target. Try to avoid wasting ammo on pot shots that don't work towards a cohesion test on th...

Re: Evolution Of Knight Armour

Realistically the best and latest armor would likely be adopted first by the wealthiest nearer to the centers of armour-making innovation while the less wealthy warriors could use the same armor for generations and maybe upgrade piece by piece. The equipment of an army would not be uniform. For pers...

You can look into Field of Glory tabletop wargame rules for some further army list details: https://www.slitherine.com/game/field-of-glory-ii (see the downloads section). One source widely used in making of FoG2 are Ian Heath's books on Armies of Feudal Europe, Middle Ages, and Crusades which may of...

If the actual combat and morale rolls were averages of 100 the results would be borderline deterministic.

Re: units moving backwards

I remember reading the combat routines are run 100 times. Is that also true for morale checks? The combat result prediction percentages are formed by running the numbers a number of times. The combat and morale rolls are only done once (the latter is only done once per turn regardless of how many t...
