I verified the local game cache and there were no errors or files in need to be transferred. I can de-install/re-install the game, but in case you want to investigate I leave it at its current state for a while.

On my Mac OS X the steam system fails to find the executable and aborts with a 'Failed to start game (unknown error)' message. Just a few minutes ago the second game locked up. During my turn (allies), I saw the axis move execute and then it seemed like a pass turn for me. But when my opponent now opens the game, it says allied turn.

Sorry you are having issues. Can you tell us when does the game freeze more exactly? During the replay of the opponent's move? Thanks, but the problem was not the outage of the multiplayer server, but something that went wrong in the multiplayer game itself. As written above, the game basically freezes and needs to be quitted from the task bar.
