ROUND 30: RESILIENT KINGDOMS

Faced with existential threats in the first half of the 12th century, the rulers of both Byzantium and Norman Italy rose to the occasion to defend the gains of their fathers. John Komnenos recorded a crushing victory over the Pecheneg invaders at Beroia in 1121 while Roger II secured his nascent kingdom despite the reverse suffered at Nocera in 1132 against a wide coalition of rebels.

Georgians (Edmund) 50/50 vs Seljuks (allendeuce) 33/45

The Georgians managed to break through and encircle several Seljuk horse archers, but the Seljuks were scoring well. Then a couple of bad turns with multiple chain routs ended everything before either of us expected.

In a battle which is supposed to be a controlled rout everywhere, somehow the Seljuks came out on top on their left flank, making it very difficult for the Georgians to pursue elsewhere and much easier for the Seljuks to get the few more points that they need on top of markers.

A remarkable game where, somehow, Pechneg horse archers managed to consistently beat Byzantine lancers, wherever they met them, leaving no less than 6 Roman units were fragmented at the end!

I'm not claiming any particular credit for an unlikely victory. Thanks for the game and all the design work fogman.

Inspired by their King Roger the Rabbit, the royalist resisted the initial onslaught well and took the initiative before the rebel reinforcements arrived. This gave them a points which was helped by units of routing knights rallying to keep the points losses down. The star performance, however, was a knight unit which autocharged broke its target unit and then pursued into an immobile spearman which fragmented on its turn before breaking. So 4 points scored out of 28 by an individual unit against orders!
