Re: Scenario Package for Akkulas Modern Conflicts 1.95
Yes, that's right, the Bundeswehr has largely stayed out of military conflicts. Here, a patrol was caught in a well-prepared Taliban ambush, hidden explosive devices, an attack from three sides and an attempt to block the retreat across the only usable bridge over the Kunduz. The American helicopters were not actually allowed to take off, but the commander of the units decided to help his German comrades and sent two. One helped to rescue the wounded, the other shot at the attackers with its on-board weapons.
Scenario Isa-Khel is available for download.
Only playable on the German side. The scenario mirrors the battle between the Taliban and the Bundeswehr near Kunduz on April 2, 2010.

The specifics and landscape of Afghanistan teaches everyone to fight anew and this is what the limited Soviet contingent faced )) At that time there were still alive generals and marshals who participated in the battles in the WWII and did not immediately realise that the military doctrine is banally outdated ))))) So tank wedges and mass offensives of entire armies and fronts are good for Europe )))) In the graveyard of empires it doesn't work proven by Nato )))Imeror wrote: ↑Wed Feb 05, 2025 11:12 am Interesting. I seems to be a fundamental part of the modern Bundeswehr. "The day where the German army had to learn how to fight again", according to the then minister of defense ; if the translation is correct.
I see that you included the black hawk that evacuated the wounded ; there are the marders from the reserve ; ... I can't wait to see how is the scenario.

Re: Scenario Package for Akkulas Modern Conflicts 1.95
I will try to make simple scenarios playable for two sides, but as soon as special missions play a role and this includes destroying minefields on a certain route, it will be limited to one playable side.
For example, the computer would not be able to lead reinforcements across the north bridge.
It also can't independently load units into landing craft to transport them across the river and so on. It would also simply be too much work and immensely time-consuming for such a small scenario to control this via triggers. Also, every trigger has to be tested to see if it works and so on.
Just by the way.

It would be an endless spiral, if I make it easier for the computer I have to come up with something for the player, but again it can't be too easy for the player when he switches sides. With special missions in a scenario, that's too much effort. In addition, the player learns and doesn't stick to the agreement, the computer only knows ...00100111101100001111.

More than that, Germany isn't very interventionist. In contrast, neighboring France has frequently engaged in military interventions around the world since WWII; so there is a form of 'habit' to have troops engaged. Germany, however, has adopted a more cautious approach, focusing primarily on peacekeeping and humanitarian missions. We all have countries with different approaches to war, without even mentioning doctrines.bondjamesbond wrote: ↑Wed Feb 05, 2025 2:20 pm The specifics and landscape of Afghanistan teaches everyone to fight anew and this is what the limited Soviet contingent faced )) At that time there were still alive generals and marshals who participated in the battles in the WWII and did not immediately realise that the military doctrine is banally outdated ))))) So tank wedges and mass offensives of entire armies and fronts are good for Europe )))) In the graveyard of empires it doesn't work proven by Nato )))
Hence the quote "Germany had to learn how to fight again". It's more about "how we live with war" rather than the specific Afghanistan landscape

Re: Scenario Package for Akkulas Modern Conflicts 1.95
Indeed, the article explains exactly what happened. The plan was to lure the Viet Minh into a "decisive battle" where the superior (at least, it was thought to be superior) firepower would be able to destroy the enemy's army. The defensive position of the base was voluntarily weak (if any strongpoint fell, the main base would be in sight for the attackers) to make an even better bait. The bait was so good that the army ended up being really exposed. Then, the "superior" firepower met an unexpectedly even stronger one, which was able to support the attacking infantry in capturing one position after another. Two fatal mistakes were made due to a more general problem: underestimating the opponent.
And yet, that was exactly what I did during Toby's last scenario
A very good one!
I had Marders, Fallschirmjäger, Grenadiers, all of them with a little boost... I had nothing to fear. I decided to secure the road as quickly as possible while my recon vehicles ensured no one approached my troops. Few enemies appeared, but I was not worried: my soldiers could deal with them. Operations continued as usual while the first firefights began. Then, I saw that enemies were arriving continuously and that some of them were elite troops. When I understood that I couldn't hold the whole road simultaneously, it was already too late: my most forward elements were engaged and one unit (the Panzerjäger one) was already inside Isa Khel when the enemies arrived en masse. I was able to pull back most of my forward units, but not the Panzerjäger one!
I had three fronts:
- Isa Khel, where the Panzerjäger unit was trapped. Saving them was my main concern, and they were the priority for all available Blackhawk support;
- I maintained a small force Northwest of their positions to help them as best as possible and maybe allow them to escape this trap; but I had to withdraw them due to the too strong enemy pressure around turn 14. The Blackhawk was the only support I could give to the Panzerjägers;

- The north village with the police station. One unit of Afghan police was destroyed, but reinforcements arrived just in time. My own battalion regrouped there, while Marders devastated the enemy ranks. Their firepower saved the situation.

Once the northern village was secure, the battalion reorganized quickly and advanced south to rescue our trapped soldiers; there was no time to waste! At turn 19, the column arrived near the village; but the enemy kept its focus on my Panzerjäger, which still miraculously held on.

Turn 23 was traumatizing: new enemy reinforcements arrived in Isa Khel from the south. For a few turns, my trapped unit survived while the main forces still fought their way to save them. But at turn 23... those brave among the braves soldiers were overrun.

Furious, their comrades became even more dangerous as they decided to avenge them. At turn 29, they had secured the whole area. Only one enemy unit escaped their wrath.

Two casualties: one Afghan police unit and the Panzerjäger one.
It was a great scenario, everything I like. A strong concept (demining a road while an ambush occurs); some usually underused units can shine (the Marders were perfect); a well-balanced difficulty, not too hard but just enough to feel the pressure...
Perfect!
You should just check the victory condition at the end; I had the victory message at turn 29 but had to wait 6 more turns for the timer to reach 35. Not a big deal.

Cool description, you put a smile on my face. I programmed a victory message as soon as all the victory fields were back under the control of the Bundeswehr, that was intentional, I assumed that after that some troublemakers would show up and try to take the villages again. But apparently they were too afraid of them.
