The Dabuyid left flank of horse archers chipped away at the armoured lancers while the Dabuyid right managed to hold on thanks to Heavy Artillery

Division D

Principes Romanes (Romans 199 with Numidian allies) defeats mcfcivo (Ptolemaic 166 BC) 59-32

The narrow map had the sea on one side and a patch of rough in the middle before rising to some hills. My Romans deployed on the seaward side of the rough, hoping for a compact battle in the open. The Ptolemaic army deployed the bulk of its army on the hilly side of the rough.

The asymmetric deployment resulted in the Roman army racing forward to put the large patch of rough ground between it and the phalanxes while it focused on the weaker Ptolemaic flank. The phalanxes proved more nimble than anticipated so the Roman units fighting a rearguard action didn't last long while the weak Ptolemaic left flank held longer than anticipated, due in part to a very lucky fallback to deny a flanking opportunity. Meanwhile, the brave Roman horsemen, a unit of irregulars, and a few skirmishers distracted some phalanxes and elephants from the flanking force to keep them from engaging in the main battle. Fortunately for me, the I eventually routed the stubborn left flank of the Ptolemaic army before the distracted phalanxes and elephants could come crush my outmatched legionaries.

Thanks for a great game that was tense for awhile! And thanks also mcfcivo for stepping in to play with an army not of your choosing.

So we would have 4 x 4 groups, 2 x 4 and 2 x 5 or 4 x 5.
