phlewis German 888-932 defeated Sgt0gre Rus 900-1053 AD w/Viking 900-1049 AD
27/53
As the sun rose the Rus and Vikings began to emerge from the rising mist and emerge and emerge. There were a lot of Rus! The Rus had a solid center of Varangians and Vikings supported by masses of eager spearmen. The German center was held by dismounted lancers of both the higher (armoured nobles) and lower nobility (protected nobles) flanked by masses of sturdy peasants. Mounted lancers protected both flanks.
As the Rus advanced flanking forces of cavalry emerged from the woods and mists covering both flanks. Advancing to contact the German commander shifted the armoured nobles to meet the advancing Viking huscarls. The lines met with a resounding crash and the infantry lines began to sway back and forth as one unit or another pushed forward or fell back. The German lancers holding the left flank held the Rus cavalry in a bloody stalemate while the German lancers on the right flank began to force the Rus cavalry back a bit. The armoured dismounted lancers on the right forced the Rus line back as their peasant spearmen began to work around the Rus flank and then moved to support the lancers. The spearmen tipped the scales for the lancers who dispersed the Rus cavalry in flight. Then the right-wing lancers swung to support the spearmen flanking the Rus line and rolled them up from right to left. Meanwhile, a couple of units of Rus cavalry had made it behind the German line only to run into hastily redeployed massed archers who began to empty saddles.
The Rus were stubborn and fought hard. A little luck on the German right decided the battle.

Division C
Vakarr Thracian (Roman Client) 50BC-46AD+Roman 24BC-196AD ally defeated wzfcns Sassanid Persian 477-590AD 50-18
An interesting game that saw both sides wheeling around to their opponents sides of the table. In that sort of battle, the Thracians had the edge, as so many of the Sassanid units were unmanoeuvrable and slow moving. The battle started with most of the Thracian foot facing a few Sassanid mounted archers on a hill. That was the Thracian left flank. On the right flank, the Sassanid elephants (a huge herd of them) lined up and were opposed only by some Thracian cavalry. Yeah, elephants vs cavalry, all the Thracians could do on that flank was run away and shoot a bit. In the centre was a small lake and a hill. Here the Thracians stationed some legionaries and artillery. The elephants had to work their way around the lake to get to them, allowing time for the artillery to be emplaced and to start shooting at the elephants. The Thracian cavalry were shooed away by Sassanid cavalry and elephants but still kept them occupied.
Meanwhile, the mass of Thracian foot marched up the hill to their front to take on the Expert mounted archers. There were so many Thracian foot that they ware able to surround one of the Sassanid cavalry units. The Sassanid cavalry were shot up and pushed back all the way to the edge of the battlefield and off it. Some of the Thracian infantry were able to be detached and marched around the lake into what was by then the rear of the Sassanid foot. The Sassanid foot turned around and sat smugly behind a disordering stream that ran across their front. That smugness disappeared as Thracian rhomphaia men appeared and charged across the stream without ill-effect. The Romans followed and by the end of the game the Sassanid foot had been routed.
The elephants mounted an assault on the hill next to the lake, and the situation there looked bad for the Thracians, but some timely arrival of some reinforcements returning from the battle with the Sassanid cavalry plus a lot of good shooting from the artillery got the elephants routing, so that only one elephant was left at the end of the game. An interesting game that seemed at the start to be certain victory for the Sassanids as the elephant horde bore down on the Thracian cavalry and hill position - and also with cataphracts facing medium infantry. The elephants proved to be a two edged sword, as the artillery tore into them and their routs caused the other Sassanid troops to falter.

Ironclad (Germanic Foot Tribes 260-599 AD with Roman allies) defeated mcfcivo (Palmyran 258-273 AD with Armenian allies) 63-41
A hard fought battle where the warbands with legionary and cavalry support showed great powers of endurance against the massed and continual cat attacks of the Palmyrans, eventually overcoming their by now exhausted mounted foes. Meanwhile a cleverly sprung attack against the German rear by medium infantry hidden in woods almost turned the battle in Palmyra's favour but were just held up long enough by a desperate defence. Great fight, thanks.
