The Maurikian list I came up with had 12 Superior mixed cavalry, 16 Average mixed cavalry, 4 Superior Koursores (of max 6), 8 Average Koursores (of 8 max), so the 12 bases pretty much fits the 800 point list. The list as is makes one wonder why the Empire in the Maurikian era saw no use for Light Horse.PaulByzan wrote: Again, clearly a function that would have probably 4-12 stands, some division of lancers/archers, Protected, and possibly a case tha they should be allowed superior status at least in the Nikephorian period, judging from their performance against the Rus in the 971AD campaign
Mixed Lancer and Bow LH formations would be rather odd, with the 2 Bow shooting a single shooting die, increasing their cost but with virtually no tactical value from the costly Bow.
It sounds like they were picked troops - are you thinking a Light Horse option as Protected Lancer/Bow or Lancer/Bow/Swordsmen at 12 points for Avg and 16 points for Superior? They would certainly make formidable foes for enemy skirmishers. It would certainly make the list more playable as well as increasing verisimilitude so long as their effectiveness is not excessive.
Thanks for your detailed posts,
