The Egyptians can and must initiate contact with the Syrians on the first turn to prevent them from withdrawing. It is a bigger challenge for the Egyptians obviously.

I was hoping to demonstrate that La Forbie can be won by the Egyptians because whenever i play myself, it is not one-sided. And the events bore it out. Sadly, four out of five rear attacks I lined up on the rash knights failed miserably and that led to at least a 16 points swing. It has a been a black weekend for my luck.

Mohacs

Londo (Ottomans) 87/112 - Jon (Hungarians) 73/72

Early on, I made the same mistake as fogman did as Ottos - feeding more and more cavalry into the fight versus the Hungarian cav, only to lose them all. But after that I settled down and waited for reinforcements.

The Hungarians threw everything and the kitchen sink at the grand battery, and ultimately wiped out almost all the guns. But they took a lot of casualties doing so, and by the time the Otto guard cav and janissaries arrived, Hungary didn't have much left in the tank.

The turning point was the turn in which *two* Hungarian leaders, including the King, were shot out of their saddles by janissary musketeers! (The MF counters representing musket fire.)

crusaders (fogman) 60/85 vs ayyubids (londo) 85/115

as the crusaders fanned out, the ayyubids regrouped and massed their reinforcements on their right where the early death of the grand master of the hospital had weakened the crusaders momentum. both masses of cavalry made headway on their strong right, forcing their enemies back into the infantry lines on opposite sides on the battlefield. finally as the clouds of dust enveloped the field, the ayyubids having checked the advance of the crusaders, and the crusaders having taught the muslims not to come to close, the combatants disengaged and retreated to safety.

a highly tactical encounter where both sides tried unsuccessfully to overwhelm the other's left wing, holding on for dear life on the left, and attacking on the right.

Tannenberg

Londo (Poles-Lithuanians) 77/90 - batesmotel (Knaughty Knights) 100/90

I decided I would try to disengage the Polish left, let the Germans advance in the centre, and patiently build up for a big counter-attack. Unfortunately, several of the lancers on the left didn't get the memo about disengaging, and launched suicide charges into the Teutonic ranks. With that and the elimination of tokens on my right, Poland was down more than 30 BP before we got any score on the board.

The Teutonic cavalry pushed on in the direction of the Polish King, and took the tokens set there as a lure. Polish cavalry lined the hill, getting ready for a showdown. But just when it looked like they'd mount an assault, the Teutonics suddenly bolted!

They headed back towards their own ridge line, but didn't get there, slowed down by their knights. They were brought to battle and, without infantry support, the Teutonic horsemen were ground down by superior numbers, surrounded, and overwhelmed.

Poland capitalised on its strategic momentum from this great victory by going on to win the Eurovision Song Contest.

Mohacs

batesmotel (Hungarians) 52/72 beat ricoual74 (Ottomans) 112/112

batesmotel 10.0
ricoual74 7.22

The Ottomans made the same mistake I made as the Ottomans and lost too many cavalry before their reinforcements showed up. The Hungarians mostly ignored a frontal attack ont he grand battery and instead launched attacks on both its flanks. Things got tight on the Hungarian left with some Ottoman cavalry getting into the Hungarian rear but it never quite managed to get any really good opportunities to exploit that position. Thanks for the game.

kalka

russians (fogman) 82/90 vs mongols (batesmotel) 50/50

the russians managed to extricate a good part of their vanguard cavalry from the river bend. a fast moving battle then developed in front of the russian wagon laager where the russians suffered most of their losses but the mongols were crippled beyond repair in the process.

Kalka

Londo (Russians) 68/90 - ricoual74 (Mongols) 50/50

The Mongols did really well at the start, flowing around the Russians, pressuring them into a smaller and smaller pocket, and ultimately obliterating them. I made matters worse by committing more Russian cavalry across the river to try to establish an escape corridor. Very little escaped and I lost the rescuers too.

By that stage I was expecting to lose with <20 Mongol BP. Then the Mongols came across the river on a wide front, pushing hard - but the remaining Russians, outnumbered and outclassed, managed to hold them. MF archers wreaked merry havoc on unprotected Mongol light cavalry. Mongol casualties mounted until a surprising Russian victory came into sight.

Kinda like WW2 really.

Mohacs

hungarians (fogman) 71/72 vs ottomans (iandavidsmith) 107/112.

epic battle that saw the hungarians slowly depleted by a herculean effort against the ottoman grand battery and barely hanging on at the end.
