Thanks for putting this out there, matterhorn. Gonna book mark this one!
You're welcome.
After reading new tipps and learning new aspects of the game in this forum, I thought I maybe can give a little back by completing the list .
Is it normal that I get Rudel's second incarnation only if I actually DEPLOY the first one during Minsk '41 of GC '41? I thought having the first one in reserve would suffice. :\
I've started GC '39 East for a third play-through and decided to do a table for the DLC '39 - '45 Heroes for easy reference. I'm uploading the word document as someone may find it useful.
....that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain.......and that government of the people, by the people, for the people shall not perish from the earth.
I've been enjoying the special heroes in PC V1.20-1.21 as I have been replaying the Grand Campaign East. Prior to installing 1.21 I already had the GC for years 39-43. Just got 44 and installed it. All special heroes have been showing up like clockwork, til the Korsun Pocket scenario. Should have gotten a Tiger 1 and mountaineer hero per the thread. Instead got nothing. Is it possible they did not appear because I installed the 1.21 patch before the 44 DLC?
Answered my own question. Had to reinstall the V1.21 update and restart the 44 campaign. When I tried reinstalling the V1.21 and only restarting the scenario - no go.
Scenario restarting actually should be called "rewinding" the scenario.
Restarting a scenario is NOT a shortcut to starting a new game.
Restarting does not re-initialize the scenario by loading up the scenario file again or otherwise updating your playthru to account for patches etc. In order to really get a fresh copy of the latest version of the scenario/campaign files, you need to really start the scenario from anew.
For a single scenario, simply start a new game.
For a campaign, you need to load a save for a previous scenario, and then play until you reach the desired scenario again, making the same decisions as best as you can. This makes the game load the most recent scenario file, ensuring that you can play with the latest changes and fixes. (This could be as easy as just pressing end-of-turn if you had the foresight to save just before doing so the last time)
PS. This means you should not need to restart the entire campaign (unless the scenario you're having troubles with is the very first one of that campaign of course). You only need to ensure that the program looks for the scenario file and loads that instead of just using the copy stored in the savefile.
Lost Oleh Dir in France. Didn't realize only the General in the Panhard had to get to the safe spot in "Wassigny" (I believe) and made a run for it with all my troops. Would have been be better to create a good defensive line and fight it out while the General and a few escorting units make a run for it. Oh, well! I do feel like I have lost a member of the family. Next time through will know better!
I assume to get the upgraded Rudel unit, you need to fight on the Russian front? I assume you have a choice as to fight in the East or West, or do you do both?

Yep, but don't worry. The choice for East/West is after GC'41, and Rudel can be found during GC'41 already. So if you complete that Grand Campaign and have Rudel in your core, you can start either GC'42-'43 West (the first West Grand Campaign) or GC'42 East with him. Spoilers about getting Rudel are in the link below:
Guys,
according to the thread, I there are 3 Heroes in two Korsun scenarios (DLC 44East beginning). But I've got NOBODY (patch 1.22).
Did you experience the same?
What determines if you get a special hero or not? I've been playing through to '41 now and only seem to have gotten 1 special hero. Is it random, similar to SE units (30% chance of getting one)?
The special hero's are scripted so you should get all of them it you have started the DLC with the correct version update installed. it has to be installed prior to the start of the DLC, installing part way through wont help, because as I understand it, the relevant data is contained in your save file.
Just off the top of my head, in 39 alone you get Oleh Dir, Recon Rudel, the Panzer 38t, a Bf109 and the polish artillery (if it counts not having a hero), all before you get to Norway. The Bf109 comes from the spoils of war bonus scenario in 39, which is a little unfair as that penalises those who don't get a DV in Warsaw (Warsaw south in my case). You also get the 1a6i Stuka before the end of 39.
So if you are all the way in 41 and have only got one special unit, I can only think the v1.2 either wasn't installed before you started the DLC's or somehow got corrupted. The other possibility though this is a total guess on my part as I haven't tried it, is maybe you don't get them if your playing under v1.14 rules, it seems the special units were added to help compensate for the soft cap, so its possible you don't get them if you aren't playing under that rule set, but that's pure speculation on my part.
Some of the hero's make quite a difference, so though not impossible, not getting them is a significant blow. Rudel (the +9s Rudi 2.0) is obvious which is why to me it unfair that he's so easy to miss if you haven't read the forum and picked up how to get him, but even ones like the little Pzr 38t with +2ADS are invaluable in terms of helping keep losses down.
Sadly I don't know any way you can get them other than making sure you have the latest version installed and starting again.
