Re: FIELD OF GLORY v2 release

Post by IainMcNeil »

Unfortunately we have had another setback today. Digital versions don't have page numbers and the index has no page numbers as they are all active links. It was never intended to be printed. It wasn't picked up till we prepared proof versions and is a big problem. We don't see any way that we can release a physical version without pages numbers but more than that we need to find a way to allow players to match page numbers on the physical and digital versions. We're doing something that's never been done before and we're finding problems at each stage that we need to work out solutions to resolve.

This throws a big spanner in the works and the team are reviewing options on how to fix it and we hope to have a new plan by next week. We think we need to roll page numbers back in to the digital versions and that means everything has to change so more news later.

The plan was to have all versions release simultaneously but this might make that impossible and the POD version may have to come later but we'll know more when we have worked out a plan to resolve. This is not good news and means a lot more time and money to resolve. More info as soon as we have it.

you could instead use section/sub section numbers. The only benefit to a page number is to tell you where something is, so section numbering could do that job. Of course that would mean a re-write of the index and any cross reference that uses page numbers

We discussed this and prefer the chapter & page system as this means any changes to a section don't require renumbering of the rest of the document.

The issue is really how to go about doing it and then linking the index to these pages.... oh joy....

I'm sure they do but that's not the point. The most recent delays stem from you playing catch up with the POD option which you originally didn't think your customers wanted.
Is it just me or do we want to give these guys a break? Yes they cocked up but they listened and are trying to sort it out. Me and my Classical Indians are very keen to get our hands on V2 but lets have a little patience. :)

OK so we think we have the page number issue sorted but we do need to layout the entire book again for print in demand. This is going to be a significant cost so you better buy the damn thing when its available ;)

I think a good proportion of people will buy 2 versions, digital and printed. You double your profit. Daylight robbery

I'm good for one. Thanks for all the effort and time put in to make this come together.

Well it depends what you mean by significant. £30 ? £40 ? More ? I'm pretty sure that any more than £30 will put a lot of people off buying the rules.
I'm certainly not going to say for sure that I will buy it until I know how much it's going to cost.

I think he meant it is a significant cost to Slitherine to produce a Print on Demand version; nothing to do with how much it costs to buy.

What, you don't think the cost to Slitherine will influence the selling price ? I'm sure the majority of any extra cost they incur will be passed on to the buyers; after all they are a business, not a charity. :(

We are doing our best to control the prices, and we will announce these as soon as we are sure we have finally sorted all of the issues. Thankfully once we have nailed all of this it should be smooth sailing going forwards.

Thanks for your patience and support

I have tried ever so hard to be patient (one of us even bought the PC version only to find it would not work when not connected to the Internet) but do we have an update on the date of the printed version?

Check the FoG 2.0 forum for the updates. We have the proof copy from printers and it looks good so we are manufacturing and hoping to have it for pre-order any day now!

"(one of us even bought the PC version only to find it would not work when not connected to the Internet)"

And, if you (or rather your mate) hasn't already done so, check the tech support area for news of this particular issue being fixed in one of the software updates.

It Really is true , I held two copies of version 2 book in my hands today, we are really pleased with the quality of the Print on demand, but you can soon judge for yourself. Final instruction to go into manufacture given today, they estimate 10 days to send over the first batch and we will be opening up for pre orders as soon as we can find a sec to put it on the site. So you have an opportunity to get your hands on the first batch. 'I really liked the feature that notes the chapter reference so you can cross reference against anyone using the digital or iPad version.

If I'm truthful I have to say I am really pleased this is finally done, it has not been without problems :-)

Thanks JDM. CanCon officially now v2. Glad that it made it. While I'm not playing I just saw a death knell should it have been v1.

Thanks for your efforts. I hope it pays dividends.
