Someone came to a trounament , used one of the late armies with battle groups of 5 musket, bayonet guys ( 8 points ) and one pike ( 5 points ) . He detached all the shots of 6 BG , created 5 BG of exclusively 6 x musket bayonet and one of 6 pikes . So he got the 5 BG of medium foot , musket bayonet for 8 points x 6 bases x 5 BG instead of 9 points per base .
An easy way not to expend too many points ...
I've been wondering about this thread for some time (ever since reading it) and had a thought recently:
To me, the one advantage I get out of detaching my shot (4:2 formations) is that I get an 8base and 4 base formation. The 8 base shooting is MUCH more resilient than the 6 base formations.
So, considering the above:
If you had something like 12 5:1 - you can detach half, so that gives you 30 bases of musketry and 6 bases of pike.
If you aimed to take bases of 8, you could end up with soemthing like:
3 x 8 bases of musket
1 x 6 base of musket
You would now have to make up the remaining 2 BG's out of the 6 bases of pike.
Would it be legal to have:
1 x 2 bases of pike; and,
1 x 4 bases of pike.
I'm not sure what the 2 base pike would do (except maybe give rear support to some mounted units) but I'm more trying to get a handle on the nuances in case I come across it somewhere...
