Don't worry. I'll play enough Diablo III for you, me, and every single other person on these forums.VPaulus wrote:It makes sense.
Well, I guess, that I won't buy Diablo III, then.
OT: They shouldn't be allowed to ruin some franchises

Have you played Company of Heroes, because it is this to a tee but set in World War II. I find it a really difficult game, its not about mass of troops since you are limited to a reasonable cap. The likes of a Panther tank takes up a considerable amount of "manpower" meaning you will be short on other fronts. The MG42 unit is one of my favourites and I love it when it "opens up", get all giddy when I set it up on a 2 floor building ha!Kerensky wrote:
Ground Control was pretty neat, and very Mechcommander-esque. I much prefer that style of RTS. Instead of just massing gigantic armies and spamming them into combat until your enemy is overwhelmed, I prefer the more 'squad' orientated game. You start with your small, but elite forces, you can't really get MORE of them, you have to work with what you have.
You and a bunch of others!VPaulus wrote:Don't worry I'll play enough Skyrim for you and me.

Woah, impressive stats. It's more than twice the number of players than the FPS Juggernaut that benefited from tons of advertisement ... It's really cool to see a RPG that manages to stay relatively honest and uncompromisingly faithful to its "sandbox" genre (in addition to all the obvious mainstream appeal of the stunning AAA production values) scoring that high on the charts. At least that's a franchise they do not ruin
Like it or hate it compared to its predecessors, I find it pleasing nonetheless that Civ V manages to stay high on this list despite being 1 year old. For all the 2K games executives justifying their choice to reboot XCOM as a FPS because turn based strategy is a thing of the past.

And they beat CoD.
Skyrim is available on all platforms though, and received glowing reviews from console critics too. It's true that the targeted demographics are not the same, and that it is likely that the figures will be more in favor of MW3. However, will it reverse the 2-1 advantage as it is on PC ?
Plus, there is a good "vibe" around Skyrim too, looking at both professional and player reviews. MW3 is certainly a good game (I don't know, the last FPS I have played was Wolfenstein, the first game, not the remake ;p ), but it seems to generate a range of reviews between "a bit disappointing" and "a job well done". For Skyrim it is almost universal excitement and enthusiasm. I know a few players in my entourage who are reading and listening to the "buzz" and are ready to see what it's all about. The game could make a lot of converts (non RPG gamers) with all the good press.

Actually, you won't get to play Diablo III for quite some time. I don't know if anyone else noticed, but about 3 years after Blizzard released WoW, they turned from developing good games to developing revenue. And I'm not talking about the normal "great new game = great revenue", I'm talking about marketing strategy.Well, I guess, that I won't buy Diablo III, then.
Very little work was done developing the game (yes, expansions were released but with little new concept or content) while the focus shifted to marketing. Merchandising of books, comics, t-shirts, figurines, game items, etc. seems to have drawn all of their development efforts. And I don't mean to belittle their efforts. The person in Blizzard who thought of the real-money market house for D3 should receive a summer home in the Hamptons as a bonus for that contribution to their money-making efforts. Their marketing team is doing their job well, but I think it's at a cost to the game play.
And that leads to the D3 release. I'm willing to bet that D3 has been in the can and ready for release for almost a year now, but the marketing team has once again entered the arena with their two cents. WoW is bleeding subscribers. I think some articles are saying they have lost 1/3 of their patronage. And Blizzard still wants the revenue for their final expansion they want to release for WoW. You don't have to be a marketing genius to figure this one out.
You have lost 1/3 of your subscribers. You desperately want the remaining 2/3 to buy your last expansion. But when you release D3, you will probably lose another 1/3, maybe more. So common sense tells you to delay the D3 release until after you have released your last WoW expansion. Blizzard gets as much revenue as possible from the last WoW expansion, and then if everyone flocks to D3, so be it.
My fear is that this will become an industry trend. Less focus on game developing and more focus on the marketing. Don't think that I'm right? Look at WoW's next, and probably last, expansion idea... a panda. I guarantee you the marketing team had a lot of input on that idea.
Regarding MW3 sales:
Regarding MWO:Modern Warfare 3 hits 5-day record of $775 million
Of course, this also means new records set for online play. On Xbox Live, 3.3 million unique players logged in on one day, topping the previous record of 2.6 million from Black Ops.
MechWarrior Online to use CryEngine 3
"It is definitely the best choice for us," Piranha Games president Russ Bullock said in a press release. "Both the character animation pipeline with the procedurally and physics based animations and the destruction system fit our goals perfectly."
