Turn 16 - Panzer Corps destroyed! Furious German counterstrike destroys BEF!

Unfortunately I forgot to take screenshots for this turn, which is especially sad as a lot happened.

I do not know how, but Leridano somehow managed to destroy a 7 step Panzer Corps with the BEF and most likely support from the British STR and perhaps some French GAR. He must have been quite lucky to achieve this, especially since it is a new feature that the randomness of the combat results is reduced significantly. This is a blow for the Germans and a lesson for me not to underestimate the British counterattack potential the next time.

Nevertheless, the German offensive continued. I saw no way to take Paris out with my Panzer Corps destroyed and counterattacked the BEF and destroyed the British INF and MECH easily with support of Stukas. I also attacked the RAF and the British STR was reduced to 4 steps. Also the British FTRs suffered some losses.

I also destroyed/damaged some French units and paris is more or less encircled. I also moved the Italian air units towards the west. Next turn Paris will most likely fall as I have all three TACs in range plus the Regia Aeronautica.

Turn 17 - Paris falls and France surrenders!

The situation at the beginning of my turn:

Image

I easily capture Paris and begin to repair my units. Unfortunately I forgot to take a screenshot at the end of my turn. Nevertheless, I can present the losses so far:

Image

I also bought the 10th German Lab, which is the last one in this year!

If I compare this game to our aborted game, the French campaign was not as successful and I was less lucky. Italy joined later in the war and I lost a Panzer Corps.

Are you sure you want to go for Spain? Its a bit...predictable to repeat same thing. If Leridano will place good unit (e.g. mech) into Gibraltar fortress (which is your real goal, I think), you can seige it for very long time.

I agree. I work on Aug 26 as the latest assault date for Spain - after that there is too much danger of the weather turning poor and clogging up an advance on Zaragoza which is what you need to get the German airforce operating from the clear weather/Med zone....

I wish the casualty screen would also tell you things like how many units of each type have been destroyed.

Good job on the allied leader there....looks like you will capture the transport in port and destroy it. It is very doubtfull that he will dismantle the leader and sacrifice the garrison.

Turn 19 -22 - Operation Isabella aborted! Axis invade Greece!

German High Command decides to abort the planned invasion of Spain, because of the weather risks involved. Instead the Axis concentrate on other theaters. I rail some units to the toe of Italy and on turn 22 the Axis launch Unternehmen Marita:

Image

A German MECH and INF will lead the assault on Athen. They are suppported by two TACs commanded by Rundstedt and the Regia Marina blocks any naval counterattacks against the transports and will help with shore bombardments. An Italian GAR will land near Heraklion to secure Crete.

Both TAC, the INF, MECH and both Italian BB reduce the Athen defenders to two steps. Next turn the Greek capital will most likely fall. Italian Division lands near Heraklion.

Image

The attack on Greece results in Bulgaria immediately joining the Axis with all of its Army. This is a new feature. If the Axis do not invade Greece not the whole Bulgarian Army activates immediately and two Bulgarian Corps will only available in 1943. There is a similar feature for Yugoslavia and Hungary/Romania. If the Axis player does want the full Armies of the minor powers at his disposal, he needs to invade Greece and Yugoslavia. Furthermore, with an early attack on Greece/Yugoslavia you can force an early entry of war of the minor Axis powers.

However, in this game Hungary and Romania joined the war at the end of my turn.

I also got many tech upgrades this turn:

Image

I also got a sixth SUB ready for action in the Atlantic and ambushed several convoys. All my units were also repaired and I bought a fourth TAC and FTR. I did not reinforce Egypt in this game (but perhaps will do it), but the British do not seem to be ready for an attack on Libya and I wonder what my opponent is plotting.

Turn 23 - Greece surrenders! Yugoslavia invaded by Romanian and Hungarian Army!

Weather is fair in central Europe in November. Both October turns and this turn were fiar weather turns in central Europe. Perhaps it was a mistake to abort the invasion of Spain. Nevertheless, the fair weather allows for a surprise offensive against Yugoslavia, but my first target is Greece:

Image

Athens falls after two TAC attacks plus INF and MECH. The Regia Marina withdraws. In Syria the counterattack against the British Corps even manages to do some damage. However, the STR only does 1 step of damage against the British SUB:

Image

It will be interesting to see if Damascus holds out another turn. With Greece secured I attack Yugoslavia. I have another TAC in range in the north, so I easily destroy the Yugoslavian INF in the north and reach the outskirts of Belgrade:

Image

Next turn will not be a fair weather turn, but with winter weather I should have good chance to finish off the INF in Belgrade as both TACs in Albania can reach Belgrade and are in the fair weather zone. With support of some German units I should be able to attack with 4-5 ground units. However, with mud weather it could be more problematic.

Turn 24 + 25 - Yugoslavia surrenders! Axis navies reinforced!

On turn 24 the weather is mud in central Europe! This gives Belgrade one more turn, as I bring it only down to 5 steps. Leridano repairs the INF back to 8 steps, but on turn 25 it is winter weather:

Image

With two TACs and four ground attacks Belgrades defenders are overhelmed and Yugoslavia surrenders:

Image

The two free BB were also finished this turn. I now have two BB, one DD and six Subs in the Atlantic and three BB, one DD and two SUBs in the Med. We will see how the Allies will handle these forces:

Image

The German SUBs also spot a fat convoy (50+) and attack it.

Turn 26 - 33 - Unternehmen Barbarossa launched!

During the winter 1940/41 the Axis prepared themselves for Operation Barbarossa. Only some Anti-Partisan action occured. In the Atlantic my wolfpacks were quite successful and sunk several convoys. I also managed to damage a British (down to 5 steps). The British needed three turns to finish off Syria, but did not make any other offensive moves so far. It will be interesting to see what Leridano is planning.

I intended to launch Barbarossa either on 2. June or 22. June 1941. I choose the first option and the invasion begins on 2. June 1941. The situation on the eastern front at the beginning of my turn:

Image

I have six ARM, four MECH, five TAC and FTR, several INF and of course all the minor Axis. The Italians also have small Army (both air units, 1 ARM several INF and Messe as commander). I also bought Manstein and Guderian as commanders in addition to Rundstedt. My oil situation is also very good. Guderian commands AGN and Manstein AGC:

Image

and after the attack:

Image

With the capture of Tallin I also destroy the Soviet Sub.

In the south Rundstedt leads AGS:

Image

and after the attack:

Image

Damn Chisinau holds out with 1 step. Nevertheless, I captured most of the border cities and made contact with many units so that they cannot be railed away.

Turn 34 - Red Army in full retreat! Several Soviet cities captured!

Second Barbarossa turn and my offensive continues everywhere and is very successful. I even manage to take Minsk in the North:

Image

Leningrad and perhaps Moscow will be my main targets in 1941.

In the south the Axis army also make good ground:

Image

I hope to get to Kharkov before the winter, but we will see where Leridano tries to make his stand.

Turn 35 - Axis press forward and reach Kiev and Pskov!

Turn 3 of Barbarossa and I still make good progress everywhere:

Image

I hope to capture Pskov next turn and then move towards Leningrad.

In the south my spearhead units reach Kiev:

Image

Still no sign of Allied movement in the MED. Also no Strategic Bombing at all until now.

Turn 36 - Kiev falls! Pskov holds out!

In the north the Red Army retreats further:

Image

but Pskov holds out despite air and ground attacks:

Image

In the south I will attack Kiev:

Image

and the city is captured easily:

Image

Some Soviet air units spotted and in range of Luftwaffe FTRs!

It looks like you will have a tough winter on the eastern front, some Russian fighter cover on this and you could be in real trouble...

Turn 37-38 - First Soviet counterattack! Axis Armies continues offensive in the east!

I forgot to take screenshots of turn 37. The Red Army launched a counterattack against two spearhead units in the north, a German Panzer Corps and the Italian ARM. Both were destroyed. I did expect some counterattack against the Italian ARM, but the loss of a Panzer Corps is another blow. Nevertheless, my offensive continues and I destroy several Soviet units and Leningrad is nearly completely encircled:

Image

In the south the Soviet defense line is weak near Stalino and I go for a breakthrough:

Image

All of the pocketed Soviet border units are now destroyed, which means I will be able to quickly rail more units to the front. I also produced 3 INF the last few turns and more and more INF are railed to both fronts.

Leridano has finally decided to make a move towards Tobruk with the British:

Image

It will be interesting to see if he supports the attack with the RN. The Regia Marina is ready to interfere! I was also able to give the Italian ground units several Infantry upgrades this turn.

Turn 39 - Stalino captured! Attack on Leningrad will be launched soon!

Near Leningrad I did a mistake last turn as the Soviet INF cuts several unit from my supply:

Image

With two TAC strikes and three ground attacks the Soviet INF is destroyed and supply restored. I also place very experienced INF units south of Leningrad for an assault on the city next turn from all sides:

Image

In the south the Soviets did not manage to bring a sizeable force to thwart my offensive:

Image

The Axis manage to destroy several Soviet units and capture Stalino:

Image

As you see I also bring in a lot of reinforcements. Perhaps I will be able to capture Rostov or Kharkov, but this will be difficult as the winter (or worse mud) will be there soon.

The British Army will soon reach Tobruk:

Image

No sign of any support by the RN. Where are his units hiding?

Turn 40 - Attack on Leningrad begins! Offensive in the south destroys many Soviet units!

Fair weather everywhere which allows me to launch an attack on Leningrad:

Image

As you see I got quite lucky with two TAC attacks and four ground attacks and reduced the Leningrad defenders to 3 steps. If I get fair weather next turn (25 % chance) I will have a good chance to capture the city. If its mud then it will most likely fail and with winter weather I would need some more luck.

Army Group Center is a reather quite sector as defensive positions were taken by the Axis and the Soviets:

Image

However, in the south my offensive continues:

Image

I destroy several Soviet units, but fail to take (or even attack) Rostov or Kharkov.

The British finally reach Tobruk and the battle will begin next turn:

Image

In the Atlantic I spotted a massive British fleet searching for SUBs. It seems that Leridano bought several DD. I'm lucky that none of his units hits a SUB.

Turn 41 - Winter in the east! Leningrad captured! Battle for Tobruk begins!

Despite the winter weather I manage to capture Leningrad from the six step defenders:

Image

Army Group North reaches its primary target.

In the south Army Group South retreats to defensive positions:

Image

This Army group did not capure Kharkov and Rostov, which means Leridano will be able to rail in units easily in this sector.

In the Battle for Tobruk the Italians launch a counterattack and manage to reduce a British INF to 3 steps.

Image

Nevertheless, they do not stand a chance and the Brits will easily overhelm them in the next few turns.
