It has come to my attention that I was unclear.

It's a mid-Republican campaign.

I did have that in the other thread title but not this one. Sorry for any confusion. If it's a big problem for anyone please let me know.

Sorry again.

I had an idea to turn this into a late republican in due course, with army reform and the like, but I'd based the points limits on a mid-rep as they've more leeway. I feel such a goon...

Senators of Rome

The army of Rome has landed in Illyria. We will shortly show Queen Teuta and her pirates that to challenge Rome is to challenge the Gods themselves. Mars guide my sword.

There seems to be a problem with the challenges in that strebe reports he is being forced to choose 1000 points worth of Gauls... not entirely desireable.

So... if Triarius could issue a 600 pt challenge to Strebe (or vice versa)
George123 an 800 pt to keyth
omarquatar a 500 pt challenge to deeter (and if you could pm him and ask him to accept with lowland Gauls please)
maximvs a 400 pt challenge to MikeK (and if you could ask him to accept with Spartacus slave revolt please)

Sounds good. I pinged maximvs but his PM box is full.

It occurs to me that having a default pw for campaign games as an option would simplify things, since it's clear who should be playing whom.

I'll get this rolling later today.

Election time looms.

Same as before. When you come to vote I need a list of four names in order: consul - consul - praetor - praetor.

Those currently holding office may not stand in absentia. Anyone who has previously held the consulship may not be voted as praetor.

Those currently commanding an army may vote, but will be able to muster only half their usual number of senators - the rest will vote independently. Those who are members of the same family each vote with half that family's senators.

A rumour is spreading in Rome that Praetor Attius Fabius Maximus has suffered a reverse. A trader with his army has arrived in Rome claiming to have fled the battlefield with Italian rebels on his heels. He said that while he was settling accounts in the camp an engagement of the cavalry and light troops had commenced to the south. Shortly thereafter he heard fighting closer at hand. He then saw the army's Italian auxiliaries fleeing through the camp and past the west gate, quickly followed by a clamor of combat on both the eastern and southern sides of the camp. Next there was an onset of brigands within the camp. As he lacked a weapon to oppose them single-handed, he says, he was forced to quit the camp along with his slaves and goods to escape the murderous rebels and bring word to Rome. With nothing but his purse in hand, he just recently arrived. Although initially vigorous in faulting the Praetor in an unseemly manner and demanding compensation for his losses, he admitted to a Censor that he is not certain of the result of the battle.

Thanks Mike.

If battle results could be posted in this thread in the following format, that'd be great.

Battle: Roman player name vs Enemy nation and location

Roman results:
Points used : Initial army size/Casulties : AP : Result :
eg 650pts : 46000/11259 : 31/47AP : WIN

Attacker results:
Points used : Initial army size/Casulties : AP : Result
eg 650pts : 48520/18914 : 47/46AP : LOSE

And also note whether or not the Roman camp was taken and whether the Roman C-in-C was killed.

But wild rumours and suchlike are to be welcomed too, as well as a counter report from the Roman general himself.

To keep things moving, I'd like elections every ten days or so. The new elections will not lead to an immediate replacement of the current commanders (they will hold office as consuls and praetors first before becoming proconsuls/propraetors. This will allow time for the current incumbents to finish a battle or two.

But in general, unles you can get your command prolongued somehow, expect to fight a battle or three and then have to return home and stand for office again. It wasn't often in the mid-republic that commanders fought many battles in their year.

The higher turnaround will allow people to fight both as Romans and as the enemy, reflects the political realities of the mid-republic, I think and should add some more bite to the political side.

Another season has nearly come to an end and the glory of Rome remains unrealised, having given power to those of the toga'd classes, rather than to those more used to lorica and field rations. In the forthcoming election, I can only hope that the Senate and People of Rome put power into those hands that can wield it for the greater glory of the Republic.

Victory in Cisalpine Gaul

Post by Triarii »

Ave Senatores

The consular army in Cisalpine Gaul sends tidings of a great victory over the invading Gallic confederation.

Despite the chaotic retreat of our light troops, Gallic allies and one of our less experienced legions the steadfastness of our veterans and the commitment of our triarii won the day.

A direct attack by huge numbers of Gallic tribesmen supported by treacherous Iberian allies overwhelmed our light troops and our Gallicand Italian allies on our left flank. Repeated attacks by Gallic cavalry broke several legionary cohorts stationed on our left centre.

However veteran cohorts held fast against overwhelming numbers on the left while the commitment of the princepii and then triarii with our equites held and then routed the barbarian hordes on our right and right centre.

Tragically our legionary commander fell while rallying the left in the very last combat of the day.

Glory to Rome

Results for above game

Results

P. Cornelius Triarius Scipio vs Gaullic Tribes : Cisalpine Gaul
Roman Results
500 pts : 53500/15720 : 44/45
Gallic Results
600(?) pts : 50800/14778 : 62/59

No camps looted.
Roman C-in-C killed - really and truely in the very very last attack of the game gave me a nasty shock given how close this was.

Paisley - not sure about Strebe's starting total points couldn't see these shown anywhere.

Finally all thanks to Strebe for a great game and a real nail biter - I thought there was no end to those Gauls streaming out of the woods.
