That is a great analysis of the strategic situation and I share many of the same thoughts! My greatest fear was the Axis controlling the Middle-East so I was quite content when his focus came apon the UK. Dont count my oppenent out yet though, he is very skilled. Combine his skill level with my inexperience and tendency for careless mistakes and you have yourself a long bloody warStauffenberg wrote: think you've done very well as the Allied defender of Britain. Germany has paid a very high price to finaly get control over Britain. It will be 1941 before the resistance is pacified. It's more important that you've pushed the Axis away from the Egyptian border. So he won't be taking Iraq. If you can grab Tobruk or Benghazi you lower the number of Axis units in Africa due to the Malta supply rule. It means he can't reinforce Libya to save the situation before it's all over.
Worst of all for Germany is that a 1941 Barbarossa is now impossible for him. His best forces are in Britain and it takes time to get them to the eastern front. He must build many new units to have enough units to get to Leningrad, Moscow and Rostov in 1941. Germany hasn't even taken Yugoslavia and Greece. Those countries can be taken in the Spring of 1941, but Russia is out of the question. That means Germany can go after the Russians late in 1941, but then they won't get far before winter strikes.
Then comes the worst part of all for Germany. Russia mobilizes in October 1941 and can retreat all front line units to safety behind the Dvina and Dnepr. Building a double line here is easy and since none of the front line units are killed in the June 1941 surprise attack it means Russia will be formidable indeed. The extra production from Russia won't offset the much stronger Russian defensive position in the Spring of 1942 (the earliest time for Barbarossa). Russia can afford to build Zhukov, Koniev and Rokossovsky and have them placed on the map in time to give each Russian units a considerable efficiency boost.
There is no way Germany can breach the Russians lines and will be stalled against this defensive line or decide to not attack at all.
What's tragic for Germany is that the lost income from Russia will be counted against the extra income from Britain. You need a big defensive force in Britain to keep the US at bay until 1943 and you will have the occasional partisans arrive in Britain.
The German oil situation must start to become quite severe now spending oil fo so many extra turns in 1940. You need to SAVE oil in 1940 for Barbarossa in 1941.
I think that Germany will probably lose this game. The German Sealion attack took way too long to finish and they failed to use the broken British to storm into Iraq.
I think the biggest mistake the Axis do when they launch a Sealion is to send TOO many units to Britain. They ignore reinforcements to Libya and they don't invade Yugoslavia and Greece with some air support. I think you only need the extra air units until you capture the first port in Britain. Then it's only a matter of time until you succeed anyway. You need to fortify Libya before the British kick you out of there.
But how can you make a faster conquest of Britain with fewer units? That's not possible. So maybe the best choice is to designate how many units you need to win and use overwhelming odds to capture the first port. Landing 20 units in Britain is simply overkill and costs 160 PP's just in transport cost and you need to pay as much to get them back to the continent. A good Axis player can take Britain with 8-10 units. The biggest problem is the British navy. They're a big nuisance.
So maybe it's a better strategy to use the bombers to bombard the navy and the southern British corps units for a few turns BEFORE Sealion is launched. If the British defenders lose efficiency then they can't be as deadly in counter attacks. Each bomber can deplete 2-3 steps on a BB and that means you can cripple the British navy if you also engage your subs before Sealion. Fewer naval units means never shore bombardments against the invaders etc.
But all of this is still so risky and against a determined Allied player you simply end up using too much time. So long term I think Sealion will often become a strategic blunder. If you take the British player by complete surprise and get London etc. quickly then it's another matter, but who plays a strategic WW2 as the allies game hasn't heard of the Sealion threat? Maybe it's better to fight the battle of Britain instead of Sealion. That is to harass the British every turn with your fighters and bombers so they get so much to repair they can't build new DD's, labs etc.
The conclusion is that Mrplow is doing very well. He will get his revenge in a few years and his opponent will end up regretting Sealion. Mark my words. Smile

Christmas Eve, 1940
Invasion of England
There is a much more solemn Christmas Eve in "Free England" than previous years for obvious reasons. Though on the plus side people are still giving and receiving presents, though in the form of firearms, ammunition and molotov cocktales. The government is trying to evacuate as many citizens to the north as possible to avoid their otherwise terrible fate. From there, if shipping allows, they embark on a treacherous ocean journey to Canada; now known comically as "New Britain" or "Frozen England" by many. On the war front our forces are fighting hard and giving Jerry hell but are slowly retreating and beginning to receive heavy damage. In a glorious counterattack to free citizens from Nazi tyranny, Cardiff was liberated. Other than for rescuing civilians and a morale boost, this attacked served no other strategic purpose. The enemy has too much armed strength in England to effectively defend the south, so once this corps has achieved its objective it will withdraw from Cardiff to Northern England and meet up with the remnants of the Home Army. The infantry corps in Birmingham may also withdraw north aswell if it risks being destroyed, hopefully after the Cardiff infantry corps has made it back to Northern England. On a very sad note, the Royal Navy in the Atlantic has been completely destroyed, countless enemy air and naval attacks proved to be very destructive on our glorious force. London is still in Allied hands and has been reinforced, though it's days are numbered as the Wehrmacht has it almost completely surrounded.
Losing Ground

Liberation of Cardiff and Defence Plans

Libya
Slow advance continues as the British Force slogs it out with the weak, yet dug in, Italians near Tobruk. However hope is on the horizon that Libya will one day be under Allied control

Don't overlook the importance of holding on to Northern Ireland. Also, New Hebrides (two island hexes), Greenland and Iceland can serve as valuable airbases in getting England back. New Hebrides and Northern Ireland can provide you the airbases you need to retake Scotland. The best time to do this is after USA entry, you've had time to build up the Allied navy and air forces and he's deeply committed in Russia. Greenland and Iceland can be used as strategic bomber bases to protect your invasion transports from subs.

Thanks for the advice, that sounds like a great idea! Unfortunately it will be almost my only option as the UK looks like its doomed to fall. However I love crawling my way back up from defeat, so this is going to be a fun, challenging next few years!rkr1958 wrote:Don't overlook the importance of holding on to Northern Ireland. Invasion of England
Unfortunately 1941 brings with it the fall of London. Though this is a great defeat, Allied Command feels the English campaign has cost the Germans heavily in men and materiel. The remnants of the British Army is maintaining a fighting withdrawal north to avoid the clutches of the Nazi menace. Allied command has vowed to keep Northern Ireland and Scotland under British control. Lets hope this promise can be kept...
North Africa
The Desert Rats rest and refit, hoping to strike the Italians again soon! Though this campaign has had many setbacks, it has been the most successful one so far throughout the war. Unfortunately I guess this proves how *CENSORED FOR WARTIME* Allied Command has been the last year and a half
.
Operation Barbarossa?
Our remaining Intelligence assets based in Northern England have picked up some chatter regarding this so called "Operation Barbarossa". Unfortunately our knowledge of this operation is in name only so we fear it details the invasion of Gibraltar, or worse, a surprise attack on our forces in Libya...

So far the year of 1941 has been terrible to the Allies, and these last 20 days have been no exception...
Annihilation of England
Nazis are at the Scottish border and remnants of the Home Army are withdrawing Northward but may get caught by the German advance. At this point hope for England is non-existent but like all other occupied countries, we will return one day...
North Africa
On of the biggest setbacks of the war, potentially hammering the final nail in the Allied coffin, was the destruction of the British carrier force in the Mediterranean. An Italian naval ambush quickly sent our force to the bottom of the sea, though the Allied Battleship escorts destroyed an Italian Battleship in return. This single Italian naval attack has put all of Allied North Africa in jeopardy. We are unable to continue our advance into Libya now when we were so close to victory. Worse off, the axis can now reinforce Libya which could eventually shift the balance of power to the Wehrmacht in the North African Theatre. If this occurs, and the Axis are successful, they would have an almost unopposed advance into the Middle Eastern oil fields. I do not want to see a fully fueled and functional German Army, that is my worst nightmare....

I find these things very amusing but don´t forget about that some WWII military strategic analysts have asserted that Sea Lion was only a nazi´s army dream very difficult to come true... Although the Luftwaffe would have beaten the RAF, the Royal Navy would have disallowed any german attempt to disembark in England... Let´s think that british and american forces had a lot of problems to disembark in France even they had completely air and naval superiority... This game is fairly historical, and it depends on playing abilities to make it even more historical...

A very interesting read. Here's one major take away, "All the evidence suggests that, had Germany won the air battle, Hitler’s armies would have embarked and sailed according to plan.". Also, I've quoted below subsection D of the Conclusions section, which concludes that Germany could have pulled it off if they had conducted their pre Sea Lion military operations differently. In CEaW the Axis player isn't burdened by the political infighting and varying priorities of different military and civilian organizations. They are free to focus the German military and "government" and apply the necessary resources, tactics and strategy to launching Sea Lion (if they so desire).
OPERATION SEA LION: A JOINT CRITICAL ANALYSIS wrote:
VI. Conclusions D. A Winning Concept of Operations
In summary, one must respond directly to the question of whether Germany could have succeeded
in Operation SEA LION. The answer is yes, although a few key outcomes within the capabilities
of the Wehrmacht and Hitler had to be performed differently to guarantee the greatest
possibility of success.
First, once Hitler had redefined the end-state, then OKW and the service CINCs should have
proceeded to plan SEA LION from a tactical, operational, and strategic perspective. The evidence
discussed previously indicates that thorough strategic planning was not conducted for SEA
LION. The Germans conducted their military operations oblivious to the possibility of including
other friendly nations such as Italy in their war plans. They should have supported and coordi25
nated operations with the Italians to encourage the possibility of stretching British military resources
by engaging in a simultaneous offensive in the Mediterranean to support Operation EAGLE
and later Operation SEA LION. The British were able through the summer of 1940 to concentrate
the bulk of their armed forces in homeland defense without fearing a threat to their economic
resources across the Suez Canal and beyond.
Furthermore, the Germans started World War II with an insignificant Navy, and it became
even more so following their losses in the conquest of Norway. However, the strategic outlines
of SEA LION never included possibilities of other countries providing naval forces. For example,
an operation through Fascist Spain to seize Gibraltar, thus opening the Atlantic to the significant
Italian Navy, was well within the realm of possibilities. Also, opportunities were missed
to capture French warships following their surrender and certainly after the British attack on the
French fleet. These warships would have been available to defend against the Royal Navy and
for vital sea escort missions of supplies and troops to the beachheads.
If the end-state had initially been to occupy England, then an operational objective of the
Wehrmacht would have been to capture the BEF. Instead, these troops escaped to fight another
day. The existence of the under-equipped BEF defending the British beaches was enough to
complicate planning. Without the BEF, German landings could have safely occurred on a narrow
front. The Kriegsmarine could then adequately defend and support it against the Royal
Navy.
Ultimately, Operation SEA LION was lost over the skies of England. The British center of
gravity was clearly the RAF, and a sustained air campaign against aircraft factories, radar and
sector stations, airfields, and other support facilities could have led to the defeat of Fighter
Command and paved the way for a German invasion from the sea. As it was, German numerical
26
superiority was such that by mid-September 1940 command of the air was within grasp. Had
Hitler and the Luftwaffe remained focused on these targets instead of redirecting the effort to a
militarily insignificant terror bombing of London, the outcome of the Battle of Britain, and consequently
also Operation SEA LION, might well have been very different.

Remnants of Allied England
The Wehrmacht has reached the English/Scottish Border and is poised to finish off the remaining allied resistance on the island. Enemy transports have surrounded Northern Ireland and Scotland, attempting to flank around our lines. Though the Royal Navy fought hard, the enemy naval assets and Luftwaffe proved just too powerful of a force for it to handle. My air force is practically non-existent, except for some remnants of brave squadrons. The remaining airgroups are too damaged to risk an attack against the enemy transports, and would risk almost certain destruction for little gain if they did. England will soon be under complete Axis control, but this advance has cost the Wehrmacht heavily. We will return one day...
North Africa
The lack of a carrier group has forced our advance to a standstill. Even though the Italians are very close to breaking we cannot advance until we get another Carrier force to the Mediterranean. Unfortunately its going to be 160 days before the next allied Carrier has finished production. This situation has proved very irritating to allied command...

England
The British are barely holding on as the Nazis advance to Edinburgh's doorstep and land in Northern Ireland. The Allies will soon be kicked out of mainland England and will attempting to evacuate the badly mauled airgroups to Canada so they can eventually rebuild. There is pretty much no planning left in the UK at this moment, just meaningless "defence lines" that are to weak and underpowered to accomplish anything...

North Africa
Advance is still at as standstill until a replacement carrier enters the Mediterranean, which unfortunately will take awhile...
Occupied Europe
Unfortunately the string of Nazi successes has caused minor nations to join Germany's evil cause and declare war on the Allies. Hungary, Romania, and Bulgaria voluntarily fell to Nazi tyranny and will ultimately be responsible for their actions in the war. Sadly, the Invasion of Yugoslavia came as a surprise to both the Allies and Yugoslav Army, resulting in it's capitulation before any Allied assistance and strategic planning could be given. March 14, 1941 marks the day that Germany has almost total control of Europe. Except for Sweden, Portugal, and Switzerland (though these Nation's don't seem completely neutral as our intelligence points to some economic assistance being given to the Nazis) there are no other countries without some German control or influence. Finland, Spain, and potentially even turkey seem to be leaning towards the Nazis and we fear these countries could join the axis at any moment. This year is just becoming more and more depressing....

"All the evidence suggests that, had Germany won the air battle, Hitler’s armies would have embarked and sailed according to plan." This conclusion and the whole document seems to be a little abstract... I simply mean that an objective and exhaustive analysis shows you that the air factor was very important for a sucessfull Sea Lion but , to be more specific, the Kriegsmarine simply couldn´t ship and scort (by summer 1940) such an army across the English Channel... Historical documents shows the Kriegsmarine-Wehrmacht dispute: an euphoric Wehrmacht, with unreal ideas like crossing English Channel would be like crossing a very wide river, and a Kriegsmarine, very skeptical all the time about a successfull operation. And this dispute was what make Hitler begin to think in Barbarossa...
I think Allies will win this game easily and germany won't even get close to take leningrad or moscow.
Sealion IMO damages Germany. One thing is if sealion is a walkover, but otherwise germany loses so many PP just by getting troops to UK and getting them back to europe that makes barbarossa impossible in '41.
and for axis the war in russia is the key.

I´m agree with raffo80. This game shows us how a hypothetical invasion of England would engaged the germans so much that they would have the soviets so close in their arse that probably Red army might be in Berlin in early 1943 or even on summer 1942... This would work if allied player develops an offensive strategy for the soviets instead of a deffensive one...raffo80 wrote:I think Allies will win this game easily and germany won't even get close to take leningrad or moscow.

I don't understand why everyone is so eager to go ahead and declare MrPlow the winner here, especially when the proverbial ball is as firmly in his opponents court as it could possibly be. I agree that Sea Lion is usually a mistake, but lets not forget what the German player was able to accomplish here in addition to taking over England. He also managed to almost completely wipe out the Royal Navy. How MrPlow managed to let that happen is beyond me. What made this possible was the fact that he was able to save the RAF, the Royal Navy, and retain N Ireland as a springboard from which to launch air attacks against the main island, all of which MrPlow has failed to do. And lets not forget N Africa, where the Axis can now freely reinforce for a drive into the middle east oil fields.
Germany is much stronger than you realize with all of the production coming in from UK. I'm sure if he would be so kind as to give us a casualty update, then you would see that his casualties have not been as high as you suspect. The UK was very lightly defended because most of its army was destroyed in France, and if MrPlow takes your advice and tries to go on the offensive too soon with Russia, then its going to get ugly. Ftgcritt2 I could not agree with your points more. In this case, Allied Command thought the political pressures of letting the Nazi menace occupy even part of British soil would be worse than military defeat. This led to the strategic plan of attacking the enemy at sea and on the beaches instead of the more logical guerrilla style defense. Unfortunately this resulted in the Germans being able to use their airforce to full effect against the Royal Navy. This is my first PBEM game as well as my first game playing the bjr mod. I am still understanding the new game mechanics and my style of play against a human opponent on a new mod. My inexperience has been thoroughly proven with the many careless Allied mistakes throughout this bloody war, but I will crawl my way back up from the brink of defeat. My opponent has alluded to the fact that his army is "in shambles" but I'm not quite so sure. The casualties list is without a doubt in axis favour and I will post it later when I have the opportunity.ftgcritt2 wrote:I don't understand why everyone is so eager to go ahead and declare MrPlow the winner here, especially when the proverbial ball is as firmly in his opponents court as it could possibly be.
