MikeMarchant's Gepids 24/41 (59%) beat Emilianojimenez Roman's 45/43 (100%)

When I saw the Roman dispositions I thought this battle was going to be impossible. I thought I would either have to stand off and hope the Romans came for me, and risk a draw with no engagement of our armies if they didn't, or a suicidal assault on an entrenched defensive position.

I chose the latter.

The Romans were drawn up in a corner, lots of superior legionaries behind rough terrain and portable defences. There were a few MF amongst them, to take advantage of the rough, and a great many skirmishers formed up in front of the Roman defences. The Gepids advanced to just outside charge rang, all along the Roman dog-leg and then began an attack.With no missile units to speak of (2 MF bow) it wasn't possible to force them out of their defences with missile fire and so two or three units at a time, at the very corner of their defences, we tried to make some headway. As Gepid units were disrupted or fragmented, or even just worn down numerically, they withdrew, swung down behind the main line to sit in reserve and wait for rallies.

On the opposite flank the Ostrogoth allies played tag with Roman skirmishers, occasional catching one, but mostly falling to anarchy charges that took them into highly disadvantaged combat with legionaries. Again, units that were damaged were cycled to the rear, where possible.

After a long time, the Roman defence began to splinter on the Gepid left and more cavalry was able to charge at damaged enemy units. The Roman need to reorganise their defences, with little space to play with, began to draw out, and once they'd been drawn out far enough the Gepid horse fell on them from all sides. It was a rapid downhill descent for the Romans from there.

The numbers above are deceptive. It looks like a convincing victory, but the truth is that, although there were relatively few Gepids units routed or fragmented, by the end of the battle the Gepid army is near exhausted. The attrition caused by these repeated attacks on Roman legionaries meant that the vast majority of the Gepid army, though steady or only disrupted, were very close to an auto-rout. Another couple of turns or so and the Gepids would likely have been finished.

I'm currently most of the way through my game with sirlancelot - we are managing 1 or 2 turns a day. I suspect it is just a matter of there being a lot of game for the good knight to play - either that or an extensive quest for the holy grail?
