Result of the 700pt IF Semi-final
The secret was the inspired general threatening to cut certain parts of the anatomy off any warriors who charged impetuously down the hill......
An epic match, with the victory coming from the warbands ability to absorb punishment and keep dishing it out, rather than good generalship. Note to self: remember not to engage pikes in open terrain......As happens with pike armies, when many of the front line units start falling below 75% (and 50% for the superior phalangites!) and getting disrupted, their army disappears all in one go, flattering the score
All looked even until the last turn, with the scores were 41/68 for the galatians and 44/67 for the ptolemies.
Final result:
Galatians 41/68
Ptolemy 70/67
Many thanks for the game, Ian! Now to find out why you named this game "guptafodder".......

SOA Results
Swiss (Deeter) 37/45 WINS
Burgundians (Panopap) 46/46
The enemy went all shooty and things looked grim for the Swiss until they caught up with the bowmen. Even fighting uphill and in broken ground the depleted Swiss did what they do best. A tense battle throughout.

Battle report on IF 700 point final
OK, a brief write-up of the IF 700 point final:
I took an instant dislike to the map. It was the one with the huge steep hill in the middle, and a line of trees at pantherboys back....after a quick calculation, it was clear my galatians would arrive at the bottom of the steep hill, just as pantherboys MF reached it's top.......and the line of trees and steep hill would provide a perfect refuge if I tried to hunt down the hundreds of archers....
So I camped in a corner, asked for a new map, but unfortunately pantherboy was intrigued by the challenge of digging me out of the corner....I tried to minimise my frontage but at one point I counted 37 archers firing every round. The light foot screen soaked up the hits to start, but then they started to auto-rout...by turn 10 or so, I was down 15BPs to zero, with several other units below 75%.....my frustrated galatians suffering without a possibility of revenge.....the centre started to get cluttered with the dazed remains of weakened units pulled off the front line.....
Then pantherboy's heavy chariots and lancers hit a weakened corner, splintering units in their path, my forces so densely packed that every rout disordered others. The odds for the impact foot to charge him were so bad, I didn't bother, leaving isolated units to go down instead....
But at last the galatians started to inflict damage, especially when they were able to reach the indian archers or javelinmen. There was a faint possibility of victory.....but this was squashed by the elephants, who stood there like rocks holding the galatians up for several turns while their archers and javelinmen scurried to the safety of nearby hills.
The Indian strike force of lancers and chariots were now mostly spent, but they had done their job well........so were the galatians. The break count slowed, but never stopped and the galatian breaking point was reached, more with a whimper than a battlecry.
Thanks to pantherboy for the game, I always learn alot, and I take comfort that this victory took him 17 turns, and I keep improving against him - my 62% score is my best yet. At this rate of improvment, I might manage 100% in.....summer 2012?

Yet again Pantherboy proves he is the master.pantherboy wrote:ROR Final
pantherboy - Judeans - Hycranus II (16/67) vs Morbio - Later Seleucid (63/63)
Cheers for all the matches guys. I think that was the last final to be completed (and the earliest starting one).
Pantherboy

I'd like to say it was closer than the result indicated

... but then I'd be lying

I thought I'd have a chance when I won the initiative, but the terrain received was nothing like I asked for and wasn't really conducive to a heavily pike and cat-based army. I did have a fair few MF and LF to supplement the main troops, but Pantherboy had more. I deployed badly and played the 1st moves badly - it went downhill from there as my choices were to fight with poor odds or to run away under overwhelming missile fire. I chose the former as I figured that if I got a lot of rolls in my favour I'd have a chance, or it would be over quicker. Needless to say it was over quicker.

Anyway, Pantherboy proves yet again he is the master of all aspects, from army and unit selection, to terrain choice, deployment and play.
Congratulations and well played Pantherboy.
Triarius 28/63 Winandersm73 wrote: SOAII - 600pts Round 2
4) Triarius - Anglo Irish vs Xiggy - Condotta Venice
Xiggy 41/40
Xiggy got lumbered with the map with two steep hills seperated by a meandering river and lots of plantation.
Just like being in Ireland - so the kerns chased the cavalry up and then off a hill while the mercenary pikes chased off the early Irish opposition then got bogged down in river and fields and were potted by archers or held at the river bank by gallowglass.

SOA Round II
TheGrayMouser - Medieval German (Early) 51/53
iversonjm - WOTR (Lancastrian) 56/56
The pikes were 1% more resilient than the spears, thanks for the game.

Sorry Matt - is the 500 a slip of the typing finger or do we reduce by 100 points for the semi-final?andersm73 wrote:SOAII 500pt Semi Finals

Any interest in another KO tourney, know people in the LOEG have loads of games on at the moment....
I was considering an Alexander the Great tourney, allowing only Later Hoplite Greek - Alexandrian Macedonian - Thracian - Later Achaemenid Persian - Skythian and Classical Indian armies, perhaps with only the Alexandrian Macedonian players allowed to take an Inspired General, representing Alexander.
Any thoughts on this and would anyone be interested?
cheers

Absolutely, I really liked the idea of a themed tourney with specific lists allowed, cheers!
Thanks Mouser
Ok, I'll start recruiting for an Alexander the Great themed tourney and see what takeup we get.
Anyone interested please post with your army selection from the choices below, please give a preference as to what army pts total you would prefer to use, most popular figure will be used for the tourney.
Later Hoplite Greek
