In Division A, ericdoman1 (Seleucid) has finished his matches with 8 wins, setting a very challenging target for tyronec (Syracusan), who is now the only player who can catch him. As tyronec defeated ericdoman1 in their match, he needs 13 points from his remaining 4 matches to become the champion. desertedfox (Kyrenean Greek) has moved to the top of Division B this week, but a defeat in his final match has opened the door for a number of players currently sitting in mid-table, including oscarius (Spanish), batesmotel (Roman) and Captainwaltersavage (Hannibal in Italy), to come with a very late run to overhaul his modest 24 point total. An amazing surge of 5 victories this week has seen newcomer Dreddradish (Kyrenean Greek) claim the automatic promotion place in Division C. One of those victories was against DanZanzibar (Samnite), the former leader who should now finish in second place. At the bottom, GDod (Thracian) needs 3 points from his last match against rexhurley (Sertorius) to avoid the drop and send devoncop (Indo-Skythian) down instead. There are still 3 possible winners in Division D, where Bodhran (Bosporan) has now finished his matches and set a target of 27 points. DocVanNostrand (Thracian) needs 4 points from his last match against Kroche (Carthaginian) to go top with 28 points, while third-placed MarcoCato75 (Roman) can still reach 32 points if he wins his last 3 matches. At the bottom, the relegation battle is between Rob123 (Achaemenid) and ggarynorman (Ptolemaic). There is an exciting finish in prospect in Division E where the top 2 players are still to play each other. Holien (Hannibal in Africa) is currently in the driving seat with 8 straight wins, but defeat to second-placed markleslie (Antigonid) could see him overtaken by either markleslie or sivispacem (Sertorius). Either Aeneas Stator (Greek Mercenary) and Bluefin (Syracusan) will be relegated. All the issues were settled in Division F last week and there is just 1 match left to be completed.

Division B

Captainwaltersavage - Carthaginian (Hannibal in Italy) 216-203 BC with Samnite 355-272 BC allies defeats oscarius - Spanish Lusitanian 300-10 BC 46:11

Oscarius was the only person to beat me in the HMA group so I knew he was a tough prospect. His excellent use of terrain and medium troops was impressive and the Lusitanians had plenty of mediums. For some reason the Carthaginians chose to battle when the Lusitanians had a delightful range of hills to sit on and blessed with a great many skirmishers it was not looking good. I brought a healthy number of skirmishers along, my own medium troops and some heavies to bolster the centre. I had the advantage with cavalry and as at Cannae it was the cavalry that saved the day. On the left flank they chased and caught the Lusitanian skirmishers in great numbers and on the right they beat the Spanish cavalry very quickly. The threat of my elephant in reserve kept the Lusitanian mounted arm on the backfoot and I was able to push right round his left flank and then into the rear of his left flank. Some overextended cavalry charges from the left flank put my noble cavalry in a dangerous position but it tempted the Lusitanians from the hill. The cavalry all escaped and the main battle started in the centre. The battle in the centre was very even, apart from the actions of the Carthaginian veteran spears. They earned all their expensive wages in this one. Breaking units on all sides and then at the end one unit holding off 1500 Lusitanian warriors on their own. My Samnite veterans played their part as well and the threat of a cavalry charge stopped me being flanked by the endless hordes of the Hillmen. The dice were with me and my plan actually worked. If the cavalry battle had lasted longer then my centre would have been swamped. That one was a very satisfying win after my previous defeat. A great battle when my plans actually worked.

Questar17's (Bosporan) lead at the top of Division A has been cut to just 4 points after Nosy_Rat (Lombard) posted his sixth successive win and these 2 players are well clear of everybody else now. There is just the minor places and relegation issue to sort out in Division B now with rexhurley (Arab Bedouin) currently looking the most vulnerable near the bottom. Giacofa93 (Pictish) has won automatic promotion from Division C after securing a seventh victory. warg1 (Arab City) is likely to finish second. At the bottom, ulysisgrunt (Jewish Revolt) needs 4 points from his last match against kraff (Visigoth) to avoid relegation and send deeter (Germanic Foot Tribes) down. random27 (Ancient British) still leads in Division D, but sivispacem (Scots-Irish) is moving confidently up the table with 4 wins from 4 starts. Blagrot (Jewish Revolt) suffered his first defeat in 4 matches. At the bottom, Doyley50 (Palmyran) is still desperately looking for his first points after 6 matches. Badger73's (Palmyran) lead in Division E has been reduced to just 1 point after wins for both Bluefin (Visigoth) and Lynx57 (Roman) in their penultimate matches this week, but the main threat may be further back with Darkwater247 (Germanic Horse Tribes) who has 3 wins from 4 starts. The Vikings may feel lucky since the Germans started off hard, gaining an advantage almost everywhere. I am not sure what turned the tide of the clash... small advantages in the chaos of battle, some lucky dice rolls, certainly the unexpected death of an enemy general. For sure the Germans were a much more difficult opponent than the result of the match indicates.
