Captainwaltersavage - Achaemenid Persian 480-461 BC with Greek 680-461 BC allies defeats ggarynorman - Lysimachid 320-281 BC 53:26
The Persians were lucky enough to get a very broad hill with some rough areas on either side of it. A stream in front of it cemented the defensive posture as did the possibility of huge numbers of phalanxes which duly arrived. There was no way I could stand against the phalanxes so I tried putting my bow cavalry in my centre just to try and disrupt the phalanxes on their approach. In the event the archery of the Persians managed to disrupt enough of the advancing Lysimachids and create enough chaos so that the manoeuvrability of the sparabara units to find flanks on the clumsy phalanxes. I was helped by some very brave Sparabars units in frontal battle that managed to survive the onslaught long enough for victory. Makes up for the dreadful luck I have had in some other battles. Great game.

Morat (Bohemians/Hungarians) beat Captainwaltersavage (German Imperial) 43-5
The Bohemians used the stream cutting across the battlefield to hamper the German advance and the combination of Bohemian horse and foot got the upper hand in the ensuing melees. A game where nothing went right for the Germans.
Thanks to Captainwaltersavage for the game.

Division B
Morat (Visigoths/Byzantones) beat dim30 (Roman/Arab) 62-54
A titanic battle. Initial skirmishing favoured the Visigoths, whose massed archers drove of the opposition skirmishers. The Visigoths swung their cavalry over to one flank to set up a massed battle on the left. On the right, the Visigoth infantry got flanked and driven back by the Romans, and there was tough infantry fighting in the centre. The battle turned on a few small pieces of good fortune. A couple of Roman cavalry pursued off board, allowing the Visigoths (just) to get the upper hand on the left, allowing a couple of flanking charges. The horse then swung into the centre, turning the tide there. But if was extremely close, and on another day, the Romans would have carried the day.
Many thanks to dim30 for an excellent and closely fought battle, played in a great spirit.

SawyerK (Lysimachid with Thracian ally) drew with Trogilus (Macedonian) at 38-37.
The match was hotly contest throughout with the Macedonians at the end in secure control of their right flank, with the center contested and the left flank leaning towards the Lysimachids. A good, hard fought match.

After 24 turns, Badger73 (Achaemenid Persian 553-546 BC) beat Kroche (Median 626-550 BC) 56-45.
Nightfall may have saved the Medes from utter defeat but Mede has fallen. As the desert sun set, long shadows hid broad swaths of bloodstained fallen on the sand. A hard fought match won by concentrated Persian arrows.

Captainwaltersavage - German Imperial 1200-1319 AD defeats SpeedyCM - Papal 1200-1319 AD with Italian (Guelf) 1200-1319 AD allies 44:4
A highly unlikely victory by the Germans here. facing an uphill battle against the enemy infantry and an open plain guarded by the papal knights I decided to defend. Both flanks were forested and I was pretty confident I could hold my ground. An attack seemed suicidal. I was convinced that if I attacked I would be destroyed by the crossbows and spears mon the hill in front of my left flank or destroyed on the open plain on my right by the massive force of knights aligned against me. Despite my own judgement SpeedyCM tempted me into an assault. I had all the luck that was absent in my other games and totally destroyed the opposing pavissiers and spearmen. The Papal knights kept bouncing from my spearmen and getting shot by my crossbows. My spearmen shrugged off the crossbow volleys and held strong and even my archers held off the charging holy knights. If you shoot the opposition enough they will not fight so well! Of course the foot knights earned their pay once again but even the light crossbows managed to break a group of knights and disrupt another. Another turn would have seen my right flank crumbling. Great game!

Re: High Middle Ages: winners post your results here . . .
Excellent summary amigo. I fully expected a mixture of spears and xbows, so mass knights and skirmishers completely surprised me. Your cavalry tactics are always quite impressive.Triarii wrote: ↑Fri Jul 09, 2021 12:12 pm Division B
Triarii - Portugese 1200-1319 AD with Berber (Marinid) 1244-1319 allies (1600) defeats (just) Geffalrus – Tuareg 950-1500 AD (1200) 61-52
The match against Geffalrus last season was a high point - a great game when he edged me out.
This one was equally good - Knight and skirmish heavy Portugese (who brought their allies smelly camels too) were (only just) too strong in the end for the absurd number of camels and MI.
Notable too for the ending resembling a game of wack-a-mole as Tuaregs rallied at three of 4 distant corners of the compass. Very disconcerting when knights are lumbering around.
A fortuitous pursuit by Portugese camels sweeping up a rallied unit finally decided the matter.
Many thanks to Geffalrus for another great game.
