Division B

kraff (Indo-Parthian 60 BC-130 AD ) defeated Challenge1 (Palmyran 258-273 AD): 65-46.

A very difficult battle for the Indo-Parthian army composed mainly of horse archers, cataphracts and elephants. The map was unsuitable for cavalry maneuvers, and the Palmyran medium troops and bowmen occupied rough ground denying my cavalry any advantage. At some point the battle became a puzzle on how to outflank them, and the middle of the map was completely packed with troops. Fortunately, by the time Roman legionaries decided to join the fight, most of Palmyran medium troops were wavering or routed, so the Romans could be outflanked relatively quickly and routed too. Most of the Indo-Parthian horse archers and half of my cataphract force was in retreat, though, and I think that if the Romans have joined the fight a bit earlier, the outcome of the battle would have been completely different. Tough challenge from Challenge1. Thank you very much for the game!

Division E

Morat (Poles/Germans) beat Blagrot (Scots) 62-46

Really tough battle. Scots occupied a low ridge leading to a tough infantry battle in the centre. Polish cavalry managed to flank round, drawing off some Scots forces: that, and a stubborn infantry performance was just enough to get the Poles home. But it was close throughout.

Many thanks to Blagrot for the game.

Once again the legions did the business. The battlefield was dominated by a huge patch of rough on the left hand side of the centre of the field with a marsh to the right of it, effectively in the centre of the battlefield. I set up in the right hand corner as I has only a few mediums that could cope and looking at the quality of the Greek medium troops decided to try and avoid contesting the rough ground. The Greeks started in the opposite corner - obviously intent on using the rough ground to gain control of the centre. The battlefield pivoted as we both pushed our right flanks forward and timing a distance meant that I was able to make contact with my legions on my right flank before my left flank collapsed. The Greeks brought a large wing of cavalry to oppose the move but lucky for me the elephant had long enough legs to get in on the action before my right wing was surrounded. The legions were unstoppable this time with the veterans all disrupting on contact then fragmenting and then breaking the hoplites against them. Just as well as the Greeks had managed to push into the marsh and were getting ready to start flanking in a couple more turns. Some poor Velites had to try and slow the advance of the Greeks through the marsh and died quite quickly when they decided not to run. I think this might be my last victory as in my other final match I am being smashed. Great game to almost finish on - seeing the legions at their best.

Post by stockwellpete »

Everyone has passed the second Time Control check. There are a few players who have not reached the targets of 3 matches completed in all the sections (except High Middle Ages where the target is just 1 match), but I am satisfied that everyone in this situation has multiple matches in progress and there is no-one who has gone AWOL. Thanks very much to everyone who replied to my enquiries to facilitate the Time Control check.
