Of army lists and nations...
All,
In the rules for LoEG it reads, in part: "Each season players are not allowed to reselect an army list they have chosen in a previous season until they have played 5 different lists with each list originating from a different nation."
I'd like to get a bit of discussion going around the impact of the "different nation" part and intent.
I get it that we really don't want people running a sequence of armies like: Dominate Romans and Principate Romans. And I think it could be argued that these are very similar armies and the intent is to encourage players to run a variety of armies. So selecting these two armies goes against both the letter and intent of the LoEG "nations rule".
But on the other hand, a couple of my favorites occur within one period...the Early Achaemenid Persians and the Late Achaemenid Persians. Personally I find these two armies to be very different. The EAP army is characterized by the Immortals, Armoured Hoplites, and a limited (8) number of Bow/Sword, Armoured Cav. The LAPs don't have the Immortals, can only get Protected Hoplites, and can buy every LS/Sword, Armoured Cav that lived (but no Bow/Sword, Armoured Cav). These are very different armies, but my interpretation of the "nations rule" is that one can't run these two armies in five seasons.
On the other hand, I think the successor states conform to the letter of the rule. That is the Isos Alliance Successor, Macedonian Successor, Ptolemaic Successor, and Seleucid Successor would technically all be "different nations" -- but these armies are not very different. In fact, they bear a close resemblance to the Later Alexandrian Macedonian. So someone could make five seasons off of these armies and really just change costumes.
Comments?
Best regards,

major matchup problem for the knights in this one. no room to maneuver against the pikes.

Re: Of army lists and nations...
I agree, but I think one should not rely on some technicality, just embrace the meaning of the rule. I.e. try your hardest to play with different kind of armies, and not to choose a same same but different one just because it's what you're best at. (Not referring to any one person in particular.)
