I find these early scenarios problematic in not having any clue about what type of armour and air cover I'm up against so buying stuff is largely guesswork. An army would have a pretty good notion of the opposing forces, particulary air power, no? I find I have to play a scenario a first time so I know roughly what I'm up against for a second playing. There ought to be scouting or air reconnaisance. In Lorraine the Germans seem to have superior tanks and aircraft. I don't seem to be able to buy enough strength for an assault in addition to buying enough planes and/or AA guns. Before this scenario I managed to take Prague but it was close.

Thus far I prefer PC1 for the simplicity of graphics and clarity, and personally would rather have seen an upgrade of that game improving the menu system and game enhancements. I can see why the developer wanted to create appealing graphics but I don't think fancy attributes are needed in a top-down tactical WW2 game. I'm probably in the minority though. These days everything has to have bells and whistles!

This game is a lot more than "bells and whistles".
Tutorials, YouTube videos, manual & forum contributions will make that very clear.
Oh, & playing the game will do so as well.

Same, let's hope for a 2D option, or a better 'strategy' map (less buggy UI) as a normal way of play.

I think 3d needs some time to get used to, especially if you have spent multiple hundred hours with PC1. I myself don't like 3d much, but I can work with it. Sadly it makes units quite difficult to differentiate sometimes.

This is critical - the extra prestige for wining early is nothing compared to what it will cost you in loses pushing to fast and not properly setting up your attacks.
Yes, set up your attacks properly, but imho if you can win a turn earlier by losing some strength in two or three units it is sometimes worth it. You can basically do the math in your head. I think it is a good design decision. In PC1 sometimes you would need to do it faster for a decisive victory, in PC2 you now have to decide between speed and lower losses.

There was not this problem in old PG3D-Assault, because it was more zoomed on the figures, and maybe the UI was better. So the problem in PG3D was that it was too much zoomed: past first scenarios and their few units, once the core grown it was unpleasant playing without sense of strategy (and as the strategy map was useless, only blips shown).
There was no hero, but the unit commandant system was very good, feeling better than PC2 super-heroes.

Lorraine was a tough one. I was surprised about the amount of airpower the Germans had. I had only 1 good fighter and no AA on my first playthrough so I got beat. Still tough on my second try but managed to clinch a victory on the last turn. :)
