Yoy may well think that but I have seen no evidence that they were any more effective in combat than other nellies. I expect that you are just thinking about their armour, etc.

Not sure they should be superior (at least no more so then those of the classical Indians, etc.) after all FoG does not usually factor armour level into the troop quality. OTOH it would have been nice to have some differentiation for the more heavily armoured Elephants (like those of the Seleucids, Ghaznavids and Timurids).

Fair enuf although surely the uber potency would depend on what cost you placed on Sup Nellies, they'd still be as brittle, my average units with a general don't always rule the world...

Cheers,

while you could balance the points somhow the best approach - hat has served us well - is to get the rules to model our view of effectiveness first, and then points come last. I wouldn't want to use the points to "fix" somthing that felt off from a simulation perspective.

Well, yes, but...

When I brought up the different breeds of elephants, including the now-extinct North African species, the answer was this - The 2 elephant bases represent a varying number of actual elephants - more of the smaller ones, or fewer of the bigger ones.

I'd guess the answer you're going to get is along the same lines - OK, so the elephants are armored, and there are fewer of them per figure.

Then again, I could be wrong.

I would suggest that the "flying fortress" concept of Burmese elephants may be in the 'hollywood' zone of reality. Its still very much a work in progress but I'm finding no support for the idea in my current research. While some bowmen did man the nellies it appears that the majority were escorts. The leadership, with a reputation for individual combat, are shaping up as having discarded the bow for combat and using polearms instead. My biggest problem is getting equipment datings at the moment as all of this may be later development. Anyway its still incomplete research and the Burmese list, as I understand it, has already been finalised. I'm very much looking forward to see the result.

In FoG elephants have to be in BGs of 2 bases. As they are always of average quality (so far) this means that they will break as soon as they lose 1 base..

Is there any future lists where you see better than average nellies being an option?

And on a related note, any thoughts on how those flying fortresses of the ancient worls, Burmese Elephants, might be classified - give them bow (or 2 x Bow) for example?

Cheers,

Steve
