Just a note about army size, alot of tourneys seem to be 800pt rather than 600pt.

The group of players i'm involved with started playing with the 600pt starter armies but have since changed to 800pts to get a feel for them (there is a difference) so we are ready if/when we go to tourney. Games are obviously longer and sometimes we run outta time but have learned valuable lesson about our armies.

When our group was learning we would pick a starter army and then make the list out of a combination of all our figures combined, got some strange looking armies but allowed us to try alot of different armies.

FYI I play a Numidiam army with Principate Roman allies (4-6AD) and don't have any problems playing against later armies (no more than any other army I face). Playing a 18BG mixed type army is certianly harder than the likes of a Gallic "line up in a big line and charge" army, but play any army enough and you will get better, and eventually have more possible tactics available.
