I am redoing the battle and tried your advice. I also put my phlanxs in a neat line.... well it was a neat line until one got trashed and pushed back, and I put my precious indian archers on the rough ground and so far one legion has gone melee on one indian unit. My phalanx line has corralled a huge horde of legions up against the river to the left and hopefully my pikemen can hold long enough for the archers on my right flank to work the crowd well enough.

In this picture, one legion has been fully shredded by indian arrows and it dispersed immediately after this photo was taken. The Roman skirmishers have mostly been whipped, leaving small heaps of their carcasses lying about, and one Roman commander on horses has been seen off the field. Still the Romans have a huge advantage with their giant, brutally powerful horde of legions including their fresh triarii line coming up behind which feels like over-redundant combat power considering the copious numbers of hastati legions, but there is a chance my arrows can cull that swarm of evil enough to even the odds.

I won the fight and did real good. Roman combat losses were enormous. My phalanx held well while my archers and elephants worked the crowd, and my light cavs zoomed around helping the routing hastatis find their way off the field, sometimes tag-teaming two light cavs on single hastati routers to really help them along.
