I'm playing a 800 point game tonight with the following composition. Let me know what you think:

Looks reasonable to me. No medium foot but to be honest the legionaries are actually pretty good in rough terrain anyway.

Some might say that the 4 base BGs of legionaries are a touch small but they do mean you have 14 BGs

hi all,
Well I played a game tonight mid romans against spartans and the romans had a horrid time of it once the legionaries got stuck in - getting all chewed up on the hoplon wall.

am playing a couple of games this weekend against either parthian (light horse) or pike army (macedonian / selucid). At light horse i am concerned about fixing the LH to do enough damage, and against the pike block not making much head way.

any thoughts / suggestions would be appreciated!

Against the Parthians, bigger BGs of legionaries are worth considering, to make it harder for him to force a cohesion test. Maximising dodgy terrain, 'cos he'll be worse off in it than you are in many cases? Try to avoid his LH ganging up on one end of your line. Maybe go for his camp as he may well not have decent foot to protect it?

You may not be so badly off against the Macedonians as you think. Knock away or neutralise the troops protecting the flanks of the phalanx and it becomes vulnerable, though it may take time to wear it down.

Just some thoughts

And I'll bet that the Spartans weren't even rated as Elite.

The Spanish language list flows from the tongue so much more smoothly.

Your 4 base legionaries are good rear support and articulation for the battle line. You might consider 6s rather than 8s if you are not facing heavy shooting, also one downgraded to Average since that saves points and will still be quite useful.

The Spanish troops aren't allowed on the official list. I assume you are making your own list.

You might want the Cav in 4-bases so they can skirmish if needed. I would probably have less Cav and more legionaries. I would not take all the quality LF since I would expect to fight with the legions and spend points there or maybe picking up a decent MF BG that could rear support an average Legion BG on the refused/weak flank of the battle line or could be used for terrain.

If you are shooting for first move with low initiative, have the CinC be a TC. Also, taking just TC should work for this army.

I am puzzled by what you are doing with the camp.

Very linear, but solid... attacking flanks is for wimps:) even if it does win games

A tough looking list.

I've been experimenting with 6X average BGs for some of my 'legions' in my LRR army. In a battle last Sunday against Indo-Greeks (a good match-up, those elephants and pikes are TOUGH) my list, at 650 points was:

1X FC
2X TC
2X BG 6x Ave
1x BG 6x Sup
2x BG 4x Sup
1x BG 6x Spanish scutarri (my faux Roman cohort

1x BG 4x Prot Cav Ave
2X BG 4x LH Ave
1x BG 6x LF Ave with javelins, lt. spear (my would be anti-elephant troops)
1x BG 8x LF Ave with slings

It did okay. Unfortunately, I spread out too much, sent the Spanish on a fool's errand up a steep hill against evading enemy LF archers on my right while my three mounted units, all on my left, got shot up by enemy MF with bow. Nasty. My LF foot, to the right of my battleline, did manage to tangle with an enemy Saka cav BG and actually rout it (I was lucky

I was luckier still when our two battlelines crashed together, managing to cause one of the two enemy 8x pike BGs to go disrupted, routing an elephant BG and hurting the enemy MF offensive spear. Good list! I've gone back and forth myself on 4 and 6 base BGs for the Legionaires. I like the staying power 6 base BGs have, but the 4 base BGs maneuver well

Given a choice I'd go with two Superior BGs over one Elite and one Average. Superior legionaries are tough enough in my experience, and any BG can give rear support to another.
