Re: First turn tactics, whatcha got...
Have played very little, but from your comments and the manual it appears that if you go HM below 50 the game becomes harder. More VC missions and NVA starts to appear. While if you stay above there is no NVA and less VC missions. So I am worried that it is much harder to come back from a bad start, while a game that starts well will be much easier. There are three (known) strategies to win, all different. Try different things and you will don figure one or all or find a new way, my only advice would be (after watching every YouTube video) is be more aggressive earlier on
Varying views on what to do, but the trade off is you could effectively have three village visits in the first turn , taking HM to 51 , its a call you would need to make...
Any chance to have some more variation to this, for example a one time even when you go below 47 or around that where you get a bunch of PP. And another the other way when you go over 50 something that the enemy gets some major offensive. Just so the tide can turn to the other side more frequently.
Re: First turn tactics, whatcha got...
these arent so much strategies as game play, but ive noticed there is very little enemy activity (therefore no intel) towards the east of the map early in the game...i can only presume the enemy hasnt moved far enough onto the map yet, so i dont send out any intel gathering units until probably turn 3 or 4,
secondly, send a helicopter out to its extreme range limit to scout out the location for a fire-base, then send your engineers (with a "build firebase" order) to the nearest acceptable hex to it and then recall the chopper...i dont do anything else until my fire-base has been erected...i then populate it with the howitzer, a beret and an infantry, i then purchase another huey and a cobra and shuttle the remaining infantry out to the FB...the base-camp DOES NOT get attacked so there is no point in fortifying it
also, it might be considered unethical, but i always pick my battles...i always choose a map that looks advantageous...if the game tries to hand me a map that looks too difficult, i just end that game before it begins and start a new one...ive gotten some pretty good maps this way...i just finished 1 with 7 villages within one helicopters flight away from my FB

So you don't apply here to give tactics, as you don't play the same game than us.kayeldee wrote: it might be considered unethical, but i always pick my battles...i always choose a map that looks advantageous...if the game tries to hand me a map that looks too difficult, i just end that game before it begins and start a new one...

I personally look for the difficult maps, if it is too easy I restart
(makes a huge difference)

Lol, okay, you too don't play the same game too.Vietnam65 wrote:I personally look for the difficult maps, if it is too easy I restart(makes a huge difference)
But your tactics can be good for easy maps. Tactics for easy maps can be useless, and at least are considered doubtfull.

LOL .... playing consecutive maps could become an achievement award. 20 maps and you get a 'short timers stick'....

Re: First turn tactics, whatcha got...
Won my second veteran game with a small cheat... I had this save game in turn 30, which was going pretty well with a 49 score, then for the following 8 turns disaster, lost units and score of 42. Loaded the game again and tried a more careful approach, in the end the game was won with a score of 60.
I really like that any game can go either way and it is up to small details that in can drastically change. I am going to start using different tactics to find how flexible it is.
