But I really can’t understand how they justify making a +9A Junker Hero??

I’m glad to hear that you don’t see the KV5’s in many of the scenarios – I was actually worried that they were going to become a regular enemy that I would see often. I am now 2/3 way through Storming Stalingrad and am happy to say I have not seen any more!

Agree also about the US SPAA being a bigger threat on the depot scenario – the map is swarming with them!
Well.
Rudel racked up insane amounts of Soviet units during the war. He was responsible for the destruction of over 500 Soviet tanks. AND other things.

Yeah, this comes up so much that there should be a sticky. Rudel is not overpowered and his real life stats- ability to survive anything and massive kill count- are accurately reflected by his defense and attack values in game. Yes, he can kill entire armies, but he didn't 'imbalance' either the game or WW2- the Russians have enough economic output to win regardless of his rampages. And yes, the game is designed with him in mind so that it doesn't break- post 1943 east scenarios start with a Russian armored unit on pretty much every hex.

Remember, the KV-5 is tough, but its gun isn't nearly as good as the other heavy tanks. Don't waste attacks on it- kill other units off first. Once you knock it down to 7 strength with a tactical bomber hit or two, it really is quite harmless. Very slow too. Let it go into a city and hit it with infantry. Give it some rope to hang itself.

The biggest mistake you can make is to attack it five times a turn with tanks- that essentially takes your tanks out of the action for 2 turns until it finally dies and allows the AIs other units to hurt you while costing a fortune in repairs.

I attack heavy tanks with a strategic bomber to reduce the fuel and ammo. Next I attack it via aux inf and now the tank no longer has ammo. Now I can attack it with a AT.

But is the appearance of the KV-5 realistic at this point? Or any other? I read about prototypes never being finished - so is it even realistic for it to appear at all in the game?

Panzercorps has a lot of units that weren't used very much (T34/57, T90 SPAAG). Some others were only prototypes (Maus, Tortoise) or were never officially made (KV5). Most of these are included either to restore game balance or for a bit of extra colour).

For true realism you'd have endless T26s until at least Kursk, but the game doesn't handle huge numerical mismatches very well and it would probably be a bit dull, so some other approach is needed.

If you come across such big tanks with small ammo (ho ho!), just drop a Strat bomber on them. Boom, 1 ammo, now you can take them out with pea-shooters.

That usually works for me.
You can use a tac bomber on the KV5 as it has no air defence, though I prefer trying to force a surrender for the prestige payout.

These are really dangerous tanks, I found that engineers and air power are the best mix to take this beast down.
