Is this possible, that I don't have any problems with demo version, but with the bought version?!
You tried the demo and liked it, deinstalled the demo and ordered the German version from gamesload.de is that correct?
Try a system restore. The meaning is when you try the demo that you buy and unlock it buying from Slitherine as in the links when you exit demo. We do not know what happens if you mix versions. Slitherine version has multilanguage anyway so German too. As a last resort reformat the partition and the game will surely work.

Gamesload have a deal with CDV. They prepared their own installers so anyone having issues with it should contact Daniel at CDV directly at daniel.grunder@cdv.de.

As you can see, a lot of people have the same problem, and slitherine knows that. I still can't use the game on the laptop and I really don't know why, but after several (I'm talking about days...) tries, it started to run on the desktop PC.
And I had the same error on both systems.
The slitherine tech support staff is simply ineffective against this problem, and now they're starting to redirect the complains and the request of assistence to the different sellers...in Germany, Italy, and so on.
It is not that they don't want to help us; they are not able to do that.
If you read the messages on the link up here you will see how they start the same old story: settings.txt, log as Admin, firewall and antivirus softwares...and so on.
Don't ask them, they're useless. They're very kind and follows you, but they're only capable of letting you download a patch that will never help.
The problem is Java. No more no less.
After many tries, I was forced to uninstall and the game and abandon the idea of playing it on the laptop, but I'm still trying when I've time. I'm working by myself to solve this trouble.
I know that it's not a good new, but you are on your own.
However, if I'll have some progress, I'll post a message.

Bye,

Sorry you feel that way but up until some day ago I did not even know that there were any other Commander Europe at War versions than those I myself created installation routine to. Exception is Matrixgames version since they make their own installers but that version was tested and released in June 2007 simultaneously as the Slitherine digital version.

It is beyond our control if some other publisher makes third-party deals and make their own installers. As long as their contract allow it, nothing much we can do. It is unfortunate since it drags the reputation down for the Commander series but we cannot fix or patch a version we are not involved in doing. In this case we have not received any information from CDV of any digital version sold from Gamesload site.

This more or less solve the last piece of the puzzle from our point of view since

- "Run as Administrator" for Vista,
- "Hotfix for CEAW 1.06"

were 2 issues that have popped up and dealt with and this new "Konnte night starten" issue with the "german" version has sometimes been mixed up with these other issues. Now we finally got an answer why and that it had nothing to do with the above solved bugs, Good.

The problem is that someone we've never dealt with has released a digital download we didn't know about with a copy protection system we've never heard of that is not compatible with one of our games for some reason.

I'm not sure what we can be expected to do other than pass you to the person who created it and get them to fix it :)

I know it is frustrating but it is out of our control. I get the feeling you don't understand how publishing works.

:D

Well, if I'm not wrong, dear iainmcneil, you are the official Commander - Europe at War : Tech Support.

Probably you are right, when you say : "I get the feeling you don't understand how publishing works", but it's not my job at all.
And it's not my job to fix a software bug, too. I's your job.
However I'm trying to do my best, using my time to solve a common problem.

I am the buyer. The reason of your existence.
Please remember that a great part of the people who is asking support here, gave slitherine "money for nothing" with no chicks for free.

I'm not asking my money back, or should I do or suggest it?

It's not my job to investigate if Leader or someone else did a wrong release.

I only have to put the CD in the drive, install the game and play it. All the buyers want it. Clear?

iainmcneil said: "The problem is that someone we've never dealt with has released a digital download we didn't know about with a copy protection system we've never heard of that is not compatible with one of our games for some reason"

I did not download the game, I bought a CD in a shopping mall, and it did not worked without upgrade to 1.06, too. So...

I surely appreciate your job, I'm only saying that till now it did not solve the problem.
Try to understand, I'm a bit angry about it.

I did not want to offend anybody here, I also said that you're so kind in following and trying to help us.
But OUR problem persists.

Thanks, flyingfish.

The problem you are having is different to the Gameload problem. Gameload built an installer that does not work and we can't do anything about it other than tell CDV it doesn't work.

Your problem is related to a Microsoft windows updates. We're experiementing with solutions but it's not a simple thing to fix as we have no idea what Microsoft changed that stopped it from working. Everything worked before the updates :)

Slitherine are the publisher of the game so we do not actually make the installer or the code, that is Firepower, so only they can fix it. We are working with them to resolve the issue, but Firepower is one person, Johan, and there are only so many hours in the day!

Because of the nature of PC's it is impossible to guarantee software works on every PC. That's just the way it is but we do our best to make sure as many as people as possible get up and running. However we are not miracle workers :)
