Lords of Italy 280 BC - Vicis Secundum

UPDATE
With a quarter of the games in round 1 now complete and a large number getting close to finishing, let's take a quick look at the outcomes so far:
Ricoual's Romans have got off to a flying start posting results against all three enemy armies. They were fought to a standstill against kmaher's Gauls but got the win over the Gallic tribes led by Cunningcairn. George's Carthaginian Invasion horde also came off second best against the home team. lydianed's Pyrrhic Greek's managed to give the legions a bloody nose and sent them heading back north to plan their next attack. Elsewhere George's Carthies and lydianed's Pyrrhics also reached a stalemate. Greetings' Carthies have lost narrowly to the two pyrrhic armies of iandavidsmith and lydianed.
A few players have commented on the army-build rules, the use of wide open terrain and having double moves switched off. For me it makes these games more competitive - as we've seen in the first few results we've had two draws and some narrow victories. I think it makes for more interesting play and makes more of the tactical abilities of foot and cavalry for example. It's been fun watching HF creep slowly across the board...

cunningcairn's Gallic army defeats George123's Carthaginians
23/41 vs 43/42
Gallic cavalry won the day by defeating Carthaginian cavalry on their left flank exposing the Carthaginian rear before the infantry closed.

Re: Lords of Italy 280 BC - Vicis Secundum
lydianed (Pyrrhic) 33/42 vs Cunningcairn (Gallic) 44/41
Pyrrhics formed up across some hills facing off against the gauls on the other side of a wide valley. On the pyrrhic right the cavalry fought an extended duel with the gallic chariot corps which did enough to prevent the gauls flanking the pyrrhic line. The cavalry, bloodied and weary, retreated to regroup. Meanwhile the main gallic force moved forward left to right along the pyrrhic line, harrassed by bow shot. In a difficult position and fighting uphill for most of the time, the gallic army was slowly degraded over 18 long turns. A good game which again saw Cunningcairn using his now famous ability to pulll his enemy's battleline out of shape.

Re: Lords of Italy 280 BC - Vicis Secundum
two results:
draw against Kmaher and his Gallic army, just a bloody battle
36/36 to 46/45 .
Victory against Cunningcairn and his Gallic 28/36 to 46/41, romans for once kept their line and destroyed gallic center before their wings collapsed.
Victory against Mcfcivo an his Romans, 7/36 to 46/42. Mcfcivo Romans just didn't want to fight against brothers, they chose instead to fly away.

A close bloody affair which halted ricouals rampaging legions.

Re: Lords of Italy 280 BC - Vicis Secundum
cunningcairn's Gauls defeated mcfcivo's Romans
13/41 against 45/42
The Gallic mounted and medium foot overwhelmed the Roman left flank and defeated the slower moving Roman heavy foot from higher ground. Despite the remaining Roman heavies gaining the advantage of the Gallic warband on their right the casualties sustained on the left flank proved to be too much.

My Gauls beat Greeting's Carthaginians 30/45 vs 39/38
My Gauls drew with Ricoual's Romans 46/45 vs 36/36
My Gauls beat Cunningcairn's Gauls 39/45 vs 44/41
My Gauls beat George's Carthaginians 28/45 vs 43/42
Having fun so far. Thankfully the battles are on relatively open fields otherwise my undrilled HF would never get anywhere..
Looking forward to the mirror games
Cheers

Re: Lords of Italy 280 BC - Vicis Secundum
My Romans have managed a victory at last vs Lydianed's Pyrrhic army, 41/42 to 43/42.
As you can see couldn't have been any closer. All came down to a final melee on my turn between two fragged units, with the scores as above, luckily my fragged Legionary C in C held out, a draw would have been a fair result!!
Cheers for the game ed.

Cunningcairn (Pyrrhic) 19/37 defeats Lydianed (Early Lowland Gauls) 45/45
Pyrrhic pike proved too much for the Gallic warband in the open and the Pyrrhic lancers combined with their hoplites to defeat the Gallic mounted..
