Re: Allied: Salerno
Beta 3. General. Starting prestige 7147, ending 1853. Triumph on 16/20.
Initially, this was tough. The river bisecting the landing zone kept my two forces separated. I was a little surprised at the strength of the German attack south of the Sele river. I had my weaker forces on this side of the river. I compensated with air power. I'm also finding that it is vital to have multiple M-18s in the core force. I'll probably go to a 1-1 ratio between Shermans and M18s. In PzC you don't have to have German AT units if you prefer to go all Panzers (especially later in the war).
Once I cleared out the Germans on around the and smashed that Tiger led counter attack (my B-26s to the rescue again), it was a fairly straight forward process to take the remaining victory hexes. Definitely easier than Sicily, but not overly so.
I really like the mechanism that awards prestige for forcing units to surrender. It adds some extra spice to the game.

Salerno (Beta 3)
Level: General
Start Prestige: 10529
End Prestige: 6565
Result: Triumph 18/20
Bought/Upgraded/Losses: Lost 2 Rangers and 1 Churchill IV I bought a Sherman to deal with soft targets and 1 B17G and 1 Ranger als replacements.
VERY nice scenario. I liked this one, intense fighting and I really had trouble to stop the German armor. Will get some more fighter bombers for the next scenarios if this continues.
Worked out nicely, Prestige was sufficient IMO. Really nice.

Beta 3
General
start
end 7925
16/20 Triumph
I don't know if you made this harder in beta 3 but it is much better now.
Perhaps it is my deployment. I only landed a few units West of Sele River. In the previous beta I pushed all the way East even though it was a challenge.
This time I deployed less. There was a major Counter Attack by the AI, but I held off with my Matilda and M4A3, engineer unit, and mobile artillery.
I did end up loosing my engineer unit.

Salerno Beta 1.2
Difficulty: FM
Start Prestige: 5631 End Prestige: 5221
Triumph: 15/20
I found this rather easy after Sicily. The reason probably was two-fold: first, because I could start with my tanks lalready on land, it was possible to set-up a defensive line before the German counter-attack from East and North could reach my more vulnerable units(Artillery, etc.). Second, allied air supremacy helped a lot. I wonder how the scenario would look if less Allied Units are allowed to start on land and/or Axis get 1-2 FW190.

Beta3/4 - Colonel - DV at turn 13
The landing scenario was easier than I expected. I managed to land all units without any attack and was able to establish secure bridgeheads. The counterattacks were hard but in the end defeated. The Tiger is really anoying, it can only be beaten by bomber, artillery and mass-attack. I thought Naples and the objectives at the river Volturno would have a greater defense but those lonly units were beaten quick. I like the scenario.

Salerno - Beta 4
Level: General
Prestige Begin: 6721 At Deployment: 2859 End: 2774 Victory: +7450
Result: Triumph 14/20
Upgraded Bishop to Sexton and 1 x Hurricane I to Hurricane IIC
Issues: As noted earlier, the mountains and hills East of Naples are Funky.
Plan:
East Force consisting of British HW Inf, 2 Churchill IV, Wolverine, Daimler Recon, 155mm M12 GMC and BL 7.2 inch. Take airfield, Agrapoli, and Albanela. Hold off and defeat the armor forces from the East and North. Then move North and take Altavilla and the fortified city of Serre and the airfield.
Central force consisting of Engineer, 3 x Churchill IV, M4A3, M18 Hellcat, BL 7.2 inch, M7 Priest, and Daimler Recon. Take the cities of Salerno and Battipaglia. The BL 7.2 inch and Engineer will then move East to support the assault on Serre. The reamining force will move orth to encounter the Tiger lead armor group. Then continue North and take Avellino, airfield, and then finally Benevento.
Western force consisting of SE Ranger, Commando, Sexton, Churchill IV, and Crusader will take Maiori, airfield and then head north. They will support the Central force if needed to battle the armor group. Then, head west to flank Naples while the infantry approach over the hills. After taking Naples, they will proceed north and take Caserta and Capua.
Air forces of 2 SE Spitfires IX, 1 Hurricane IIC, 3 Mosquito VI S1, and 2 Lancaster III will support wherever needed.
The naval forces with the Heavy Cruiser and Light Cruiser will provide naval bombardment support of the coastal cities as needed.

Re: Allied: Salerno
Okay, seems to work fine for me. The allies have a real tough time of it. I have not noticed any glitches. But, I am into playing the game and seeing how the game feels for play. I like it a lot, maybe even better than the original PZ Corps. The game engine works well and its actually entertaining which, more than historically, is more important to me at this point. Its historical enough for a game and not as a blow by blow keeping in line with history.
Re: Allied: Salerno
Beta 4, FM, Chess mode, Triumph 11/20 (like last time, could have pushed to 10 turns), ending prestige 8622.
This map is still a "promenade", without real difficulties. The Tiger tank didn't attack my Churchill tank and I was able to destroy it in 2-3 turns with airplanes.
I have the same remark as Zappel concerning the mountains near Naples, they seem strange...

Re: Allied: Salerno
Beta 4
- this time, i thought, i'd deployed my troops better. Worked - until the first german counterattack from SE. Took me most of my bombers to help those troops so advance in the north slowed down.
- second counter attack (including a tiger) hit me by surprise .. but did not prove to be a big problem (my hellcat might tell a different story
)
- all in all, not one of the difficult ones. Took me 12 turns to take Serre due to concentrating a lot of the equipment on the way north.
- tried using more infantry, leaving some fighters in reserve. Having almost no enemy fighters in the air may unbalance things. Having 2 to 3 mosquitos is enough to cope with eventuall axis bombers .. but starting without any fighters would not be ok to me .. even if they are not needed.
- Cities to the north are badly defended .. but ok, concentrating defense to Neapel is realistic enough to me.
Finished DV in 15/20

Re: Allied: Salerno
Standalone scenario
Leutnant Level
RC1
Was the Luftwaffe totally absent in Salerno historically ?
Found strange I never saw a single German plane.
1 more turn and I got Benevento (VH) in the North.
Since I knew I did not have to capture all VHs I took my time...
I was afraid a moment by the German armor counterattack, hopefully may airforce could soften their strength. I like such surprises, the scenario seems to "live".
Excellent scenario but for the 1st time I found it too easy compared with other scenarios also played at Leutnant level.

Re: Allied: Salerno
RC1
FM with no OS
Start pp 43490, End pp 52982
Triumph 17/20, 17 core step losses.
Starting with a foothold on the beach helps a lot. With all my units at strength 10, I badly felt the power of the OS and experienced german units, The 14 str SE Pz IVH was very tough. Churchills can stand the fight but Shermans are extremely vulnerable. The First german counterattack on turn 4 in the south was not too hard to fend off. The major counterrattack from turn 7 to 11 was much tougher. Hopefully The allies enjoy a total air superiority, and there are very few Flak assets, for a change from the previous scenarios.
Main problem: After fending off the second counterattack there's very little goin on in the scenario, Naples is uneventful, and the north part of the map is almost useless. In short very tough battle for one fourth of the scenarion on a tiny portion of a large map.
I would reduce the turn limit a little or add some extra german units in the north even if they were only to conduct a fighting withdrawal.
A massive +9000pp at the end of the scenario!

RC01. General. Starting prestige 16818, ending 11197. Triumph on 17/20.
My second time through this scenario. I was prepared for the strong German counter attack this time. Hard fighting, but having the right equipment in the right places helps a lot. I also used a bridge layer tank in this scenario. That made things much easier. I was able to reinforce the forces south of the Sele river easily. The Tiger is tough to kill, but not impossible. My Churchill tanks are very tough themselves. I'll definitely be playing on the higher difficulty level once I buy the game.
No issues, seems ready for release.
