It's certainly handy, the problem is that the cavalry rarely dismount and are a little overpriced at 12 points if they don't.

And that's the issue with much of this freebie dismounting. It looks like a free lunch, but if you want it, you're stuck with armies that aren't great anyway.

Mid you, Tibetans would be fun. Cataphracts that dismount as heavily armoured spear mmmmmm.
Considered the Tibetans... nice :).

But, I think if you bought your army (Carolingians for example) with the concept of the free dismount... IE - make the ones to remain mounted superior, and the ones you know you're going to dismount as average, you effectively do get a fairly good army.

Anyway - I do hear what you're saying... the thing is that there are armies that 'aren't that great' that people take WITHOUT the freebie... like Vikings for example :)

firstly, my usual regarding of the dismounting rule is frustration trying to recreate arbedo (have to buy extra knights and dismount some as a reserve) however this is the only reference I can think of of dismounting during a battle.

would a rule to say all dismounters must be declared before deployment after finding out the opponent and/or terrain be appropriate
as this would cover the main reason to dismount (specific terrain or oppoent to deal with) without allowing specific match-ups.

But in V2 the average mounted 'MAY' cost less than what they dismount as under some proposals
I'm working on the assumption that the changes to the point system proposed so far a very much a "work in progress" and that this is a loophole that is pretty much certain to be closed (probably by simply stipulating you are priced as the more expensive of the two options when you are dismount capable).

You should note there have been rather definiative statemetns that there will be no point changes.

1) For a historical recreation go ahead and allow dismounted directly.
2) Most players will abuse in game dismounting which is why its not allowed. IMHO that is a good thing.
3) Personally I find the current dismounting rules pretty clear and easy. They are rare and almost always in armies that you know they have the option.
