Roman Mid-Republican Campaign
Moderators: Slitherine Core, FoG PC Moderator, NewRoSoft
Senators of Rome, senator Aemilianus has spoken eloquently about how he proposes to deal with the new threats approaching our borders. Yet his family has only recently gained favour in the senate, apparently some successful border skirmish, less than 200 peasants I hear.
Yet, since the very early days of the Republic was it not the Claudii family that fought for mother Roman? Was it not our ancestors that led Rome to victories over Tarracina and Capua. Did we not expel the Tarquins? Had it not been for the Claudii family the people of Rome would still be under a despotic king!
Are we to trust the fate of Rome herself on an untried newcomer or the family that helped Rome become THE regional power!

Ave Senatores,
it is my firm opinion that first of all our glorious nation should expand her boundaries into the wealthy land of Sicily, inhabited by the effeminate Greeks and full of that richness and grain that could sustain the consequent steps of expansions into other countries. As everyone of you perfectly knows “pecunia nervos belli” (“money is the nerves or war”), so let us conquer the richest of the land firstly and then concentrate against stronger enemies.
I, Iunius Cornelius Lysimachos, offer my military experience to undertake this great enterprise granting to fight for the Republic to my lastest drop of blood!

My dear members of the Senate
I note that in the forthcoming election that some of my illustrious colleagues may feel that their individual obligations prevent their voting for my well earned elevation to the Consulship.
Should that be the case, I wish to assure them that this in no way compromises my feelings for them, knowing that I can rely on their support of my additional offer to serve the Republic in the capacity of Praetor. Such is my devotion to the cause of serving our noble Republic in the same way as so many of my Fabian ancestors who provided such sound leadership and fortitude in times when Rome needed their unrivalled skills.
I assure them that their support will be amply rewarded in the future.
T Attius Maximvs (Fabii) Candidate for Consulship, Candidate for Praetorship
1 I support calls to annex Sicily to give it's people the benefits of Roman guidance.
2 I support calls for war on the Gallic tribes north of Transalpine Gaul by means of a pre-emptive strike.
3 I call for immediate demands to the Illyrian Royal family to apprehend and present here in Rome the member of their royal family who abused our subjects, within the next month, or suffer the wrath of the Roman people in the form of military action.
Ave

Colleagues
We have now heard representations from all senators who have put themselves forward for tomorrow elections. Each has in their own way suggested how they will deal with the matters currently before us, but I would suggest that in doing so they have failed to understand what is Rome.
Rome does not decide how to deal with some upstart Gaul chieftain or demands to Illyria. My earnest while colleagues, Rome must become the world. It is only the Claudii who has the foresight, the vision to take Rome to its destiny!

Dear Fathers of the motherLand,
having heard the wise words of our colleague T Attius Maximvs, I support his noble aims to fight the Gauls as Praetor while still stressing the need to appoint as consul a general to wage war against Sicily, being this the most important goal to achieve.
It's in your authority to choose that man and, while hoping to be appointed for this task, I am anyway ready to give place to anyone else will be regarded as the most competent to do the job, being my only interest to have the best for Rome!

Ave
The worries and woes of a city as great as ours bear heavily upon the fathers of the city in this great senate.
My esteemed family member Iunius Cornelius Lysimachos has made an eloquent case for the annexation of Sicily and we must move to ensure the doorstep to Italy is secure.
However be aware that Sicily and Syracuse are entwined in trade with Carthage. It would not benefit us to antagonise the punici while at our backs are the barbarian tribes of Transalpine Gaul. People who know no honour and who would be quick to take punic gold.
The Cornelii of long and distinguished patrician antecedents believe that the Gaullish threat can never be underestimated.
Have they not soiled our streets in too recent history?
Now is the time to remove this threat for good and all.
The Cornelii ever willing to scafrice to duty and to Rome will offer the services of their senior family members to the senate as consul and praetor.
I move that the senate votes for
a) forces to subdue Transalpine Gaul
I Publius Cornelius Triarius Scipio will undertake to enter Transalpine Gaul and remove the threat of the Gaulish barbarians at the head of a consular army if the senate so wish this.
The experience of Fabius Maximus and the Fabii name will lend strength to our arms as Praetor.
b) forces to annex Sciliy and move under our protection the city state of Syracuse
A consular force under the Claudii with able praetorship from Iunius Cornelius Lysimachos

Formal Proposal
Ave Senatores,
Alea iacta est!
The serious business of disposing our legions is upon us.
I argue that the senate must give due weight to the rumours of Gallic forces ready and willing to once more bring depredation to the fields and farms of greater Italy.
Therefore I propose
Our esteemed consul Claudius (george123), should be entrusted with 600 points of legionary troops.
The chastisement of the Illyrians cannot be easily reinforced at this time.
The creation of a Gallia Togata would then be possible by using the remainder of our troops thus
Cisalpine Gaul - Consular army of 500 points
Transalpine Gaul - Preatorian army of 500 points
Northern Italy Preatorian army of 400 points
The latter army under the noble T. Attius Fabius Maximus should be held ready to enter Cisalpine Gaul or be shipped to Massila and Transalpine Gaul, should there be any significant resistance to our arms in their pacification of unruly Gallic tribes.
Should there be early success against the gallic tribes the senate may wish to request that Preator T. Attius Fabius Maximus enter Sicily to press Roman interests in the province and show our contempt of their arrogant threats.
Salute

My apologies, I got home from work only to find the voting had ceased (it's still the 6'th here.)! oops should have voted yesterday
Gaius Strebcus stumbles into the quite dark empty senate, shouts out his vote "Claudius for Counsul and O. Lentulus Cunctator for Praetor" and falls into a drunken stupor onto the floor.

Twas ever thus - the politocos of the forum prostitute their votes at the expense of the people. We have donkeys leading our lions while our best generals are left without commands. It is a tragic day for Rome.

Talent is often overlooked...
rest assured that everyone will get a chance at leading the Romans to glory or humiliating defeat... emergencies will arise, and faction support will fluctuate (allowing the unsuccessful this time to band together to win next time - or to muscle their way into the ruling 'faction'.
Strebe: no worries. I'm sorry you missed the vote, but I want to keep things moving fairly fast so we can get to the fighting by the weekend.

I thought it was but wanted to make a general point...
Also, is nanyone going to make a formal proposal for army allocation? I wasn't certain whether Triarius' above post was intended as such.

I thought it was? it does say Formal Proposal in the Subject Box. Seems a reasonable proposal, lets vote on it and get on with my humilating defeat.
