Probably is useful to have something else near the elephants that can do the "low end" charging to chase away the lights. Then you can move the elephants up during the normal move phase to keep them less vulnerable.

But the amusment value of scythe chariots should not be underestimated. I've used them a few times and their threat value can keep an area clear. Once they actually routed a LH unit all on their own.
