It just seems a bit odd that you can't contract in the face of the enemy, or double wheel during an advance, but its ok to turn 180 (presenting a tasty flank) and then move away.

Actually its turn 90 degrees and move if your drilled or cav and then its still complex or lights, turning 180 you have to remain stationairy unless you are super fast lights who can move faster than the speed of light or at least most heavies. Other troops would have to stand and take it or charge themselves. Not many options when you are pinned which was the whole idea of it I would guess. Unless you feel really lucky being charged in a flank not the best idea.

I think you might be missing the game design side of this.

Contracting in front of the enemy can be very beneficial in 'game' terms. A bad fight on a one element frontage is way better than a bad fight on a mullti element frontage. Not to mention getting people out from behind you!

Presenting your flank is just plain bad, although I am sure with lots of thought we might find a situation where its advantageous, but thats why we have outliers.

Of course you can't contract while pinned so if you want to shrink your frontage better to do it before they get so close.

Blatherguts tactic is to keep his unarmoured HW Dacians in a colum till we contact and then go for the free expansion in matching overlaps, keeps me from getting lots of ++ POA's on impact and during melee he makes me drop my armor POA. Bloody Romans

Yes but more ofa room mechanic in that only a fool wouyld turn 90 and do so and not run away.

I have turned 180 to run away when in a rest area - brought some cav up to interpept the threat and thereby got away ...
