Yeh thats my plan too (did the same last game aswell) I just dont feel safe leaving oils in Italys hands!OzHawkeye wrote:

Though I did last time let them get some PP producing cities....would you say that was a bad or good move? I'm just thinking man power wise its not wise to overbuild with the Germans

The longer the war goes, the more usefull PP for Italy tend to be. If things are going well for Germany by 1942 Germany will be suffering a combination of manpower shortages and PP surpluses (I've ended games with 2,000+ German PP in the pool). Due to its industrial base, Italy needs every PP it can get its hands on (I let Italy "conquer" Yugoslavia, Greece, everything in the middle east and as much otherstuff as possible. I also concentrate Italian labs in infantry. If things go well, by 1942 Italy has a decent PP base, and Infantry that is better than anyone else's, so Italy can do a lot of the heavy Infantry loss attacks to allow Germany to preserve manpower points for their armour, motorized & air units.

I did forget to mention oil. The ONLY units (besides leaders) I ever build for the Italians are infantry (or motorized). Italian armour & air units start so far behind the other power's, that it's best to rely on the Luftwaffe where there's any enemy fighters. Italian motorized, despite using oil, can be very useful though. Motorized will never use more than 3 oil per turn (move attack, defend) while armour start using up to 9. Since 2 motorized units can cause somewhat more damage than 1 armour, letting the Italians build motorized will help make up for the lack of shock of pure leg infantry. Level 10+ leg Inf are pretty deadly on their own, but the extra movement range that motorized units helps also (except in the Russian winter).OzHawkeye wrote:My only caveat to Jyri's statement would be Oil. For me, it's German Oil, the Italians can walk.

June 27, 1940 - London underseige. Allied leaders shocked as Italy declare war in support of Germany
Good news from German Scientists..

Dispositions in England start of turn

Luftflotte 3 begins with ground attack on the corp unit SW of London. No RAF intercepters...where have they gone? Luflotte 3 loses a step and takes 2 off of the UK corp. Luftflotte 1 also attacks the same corp taking no damage and inflicting a further 2 steps.
16 Panzer Korps forces the UK corp back with a further 4 steps lost, losing only 1 in return. 7 Panzer Korps finishes the job for no loss and ends next to London.
2 Korps moves to south of Cardiff and manages to knock a step off of the RN 3rd battle squadron docked in Cardiffs port.
9 Korps (lowest effectiveness in England) moves next to the Highseas fleet to act as supply source, all other units advance. I can now see that Birmingham has a Garrison unit in it and the 1st Fighter group is based to the north of the city with only 4 steps remaining.
Luftflottes 2 and 4 begin bombardment of London losing a step a piece and removing 1 step from the UKs 1st Infantry corp as well as lowering their enthrechment to 6. The newly built Luftflotte 5 (tac bomb) rebases to mainland England in range of Edinburgh to the north.
England at end of turn

Rommel takes command of 3 Panzer Korps in Marseilles, 19 Motorised and 4 Korps rail to join him to increase effectivness until they are ready to deploy to Africa.
Germany builds their 8th lab making it an infantry 1 as that area is lagging behind in research. This leaves 29 PPs which I save till next turn.
Italy can now build a maximum of 4 labs so go for their 2nd General lab as I still want industry badly as well as organisation.
Allied turn
Germany no longer stands alone....

The RN 3rd battle squadron shells 2 Korps in preperation for an attack by the UK corp unit in Cardiff resulting in 4 step loses to 2 Korps and 2 to the UK corp. Both other RN battle squadrons move away.
The UKs 1st infantry corp based in London attacks out losing 3 steps and taking 3 steps off of 27 Korps.
Summary:
At last the chance to get to Africa and some more oil!!!! I currently have under 500 oil points in reserve, not quite panic stations yet but it is going down every turn!
The invasion of England is going well and I predict London will fall next turn. After that I can redirect some Luftflotte to Africa (1 fgt and 1 tac bomb)
PP production is at a nice level, I'll max out labs now and possibly 1 more sub before making units in preperation for Balklands and then barborassa

July 17, 1940 - British goverment and Royal Family evacuated to Canada shortly before German Panzers over run London!
Fantatsic news form German and Italian scientists

With Italy joining the war Axis military might swells. The Italians bring 13 infantry Corps (7 corp units, 6 Garrison) and 1 Armoured Corp. The Italian airforce numbers a lone fighter group but their navy is comprised of 3 Battleship fleets and a Submarine flotilla, hopefully enough to win control of the med (especially with at least 1 UK BB redeployed from the med to the Atlantic)
Situation in UK at start of turn

The RAF has rebased again...where to this time I wonder?
Luftflotte 2 leads the air assault on London inflicting 2 step loses for 1 of their own. Luftflottes 1 and 3 join the attack losing no steps and inflicting 1 more on the UKs 1st Infantry corp, his also lowers their entrenchment to 4 and effectivness to 54.
The damaged 27 Korps lauches a counter attack removing 2 more steps from the UK corp for no loses in return. 16 Panzer Korps breaks the London defenses losing 1 step in the process but finishes the turn holding the Bristish Capital.
With London taken attention is turned to Birmingham. Luftflotte 5 removes 2 steps from the Garrison there. 17 Korps, 6 Motorised and 7 Panzer combine to take the city losing 2, 1 and 0 steps respectively. From the new positions we can see another UK garrison holding Liverpool and the RAF fighter base is found once again.
2 Korps moves away from Cardiff to prevent another attack from the city and succedes in removing another step from the RNs 3rd battle squadron. 9 Korps although no longer needed to provide supply holds position to buld up effectiveness.
No longer needed to block the channel Uboat flotillas 1 and 2 move to block the 3rd battle squadrons escape from Cardiff. Uboat flotilla 3 moves accross in support whilst the Highseas fleets finds shelter in the port at Brest.
The British can not stop the invasion

The Germans build their 2nd armour lab and the Italians their 2nd infantry lab.
The Italian navy takes to the seas ready to protect troop transports heading to Africa. 3 Panzer korps is the 1st German unit to embark. The Italians Armoured corp and airforce rail to Taranto ready to set sail next turn.
Allied turn
The RAF withdraws again..
The last UK Cops by London launches a counter attack against 27 Korps taking a step loss but inflicting 3.
3rd battle squadron repairs to full strength.
Summary:
The plan is to build only infantry and naval units for Italy. Hopefully I can neutrilise the RN in the Med and redeploy the Italian navy to the Atlantic to help there. Im hoping I can take out the RN BB docked in Cardiff...time will tell if it proves too costly but I'm hoping that once the city is taken then they wont be able to repair in the port again....I could be wrong about that though!

August 6, 1940 - British troops in Egypt prepare themselves as Italian forces seen heading towards boarder
German scientists have more great news...

Germany builds a 2nd Naval lab and switches Air labs focus to dogfight. Italy saves PP's for naval transport and a leader.
UK at begining of turn

Luftflotte 5 see's her 1st action with an attack on Cardiff knocking 2 steps off the UK corps for no losses.
6 Motorised Korps, 9 Korps and 17 Korps encircle Cardiff and overrun the city taking 1, 2 and 0 step loses respectively.
16 Panzer attacks the last UK corps by London knocking off 7 steps for no losses! 7 Panzer finishes the job for no loss.
Luftflotte 4 rebases to Birmingham and spots the RAF base further north. All other 3 Luftflotte repair as does 2 and 27 Korps. Uboat Flotillas maintain blockade of Cardiff port.
UK at end of turn

In the Med 3 Panzer korps reaches the African coast with the Italian armoured and air units just behind. 4 Korps sets sail from Marseille whislt 19 motorised korps rails to Taranto along with the Italian Alpni corps ready to set sail next turn.
The Italian Navy deploys to cover the transports

The Italian 10, 20 (mot) and 21 corps start moving east towards the Egyptian boarder.
Allied turn
The 3rd battle squadron attempts to leave Cardiffs port and runs strait into Uboat flotilla 1 losing 2 steps.
The RAF fighter group finally stops running and holds to repair upto 7 steps
Summary:
Well the attack on Egypt should start soon. The 2 units railed to Taranto will be the last 2 ground units sent to Africa and along with the German fighter and Tac bomber I'll rail down next turn should be more than enough to over run the Brits in Egypt and Iraq. More oil here we come, woo hoo!
Mainland Uk is all but mine now and it's really just the mopping up in the north to do. I can start pulling some units out back to France ready to rail to the east soon, all good!
My research is going ok and with strategic operations level 1 finished I should have switched focus to dogfight last turn but I forgot! Still I'll wait for dogfight level1 before I upgrade my fighters and close air suport level 1 to upgrade my tacs.

August 26, 1940 - RAF destroyed as effective fighting force on mainland Britain. RN reports loss of an entire battle group trapped in port
I interupt my lab building to purchase a 3rd Tac bomber as I'll want 1 for the Balklands campaign as soon as my eastern minors join up.
Uk at start of turn

7 Panzer korps attacks the new RAF airbase knocking 5 steps off the remaining fighters. The last 2 steps are destroyed as they scramble by Luftflotte 4 for no loss. The RAF ceases to be a fighting force in UK.
I now see that the 54th infantry (garrison unit) is stationed in Edinburgh.
6 Motorised korps, 2 korps and 17 korps assault the RN 3rd battle squadron knocking off 7 steps. Uboat Flotilla 2 finishes them off for no loss.
9 and 27 korps advance on Liverpool. Luftflotte 5 knocks off 2 steps from the Liverpool garrison.
16 Panzer repairs, Uboat flotillas 1 and 3 take to the seas looking for targets of oppurtunity and Luftflotte 3 rebases to northern England. Its in a slightly dodgy position but I doubt either garrison units present much threat, esecially as it means abandoning their entrenchments and it means the fighter can hit all remianing UK cities. I also spot the 45th Infantry (garrison unit) in Glasgow.
UK at end turn

In Africa the 3rd Italian fleet scouts ahead and finds the 8th army in Egypt, it shells 1 of the corps knockng off a step.
The Italian army moves to the Egyptian boarder ready to cross over next turn. The 1st wave of reinforcements moves next to the Egyptian coast with the 2nd wave not too far off. The remainder of the Italian fleet take up screening positions as best they can.
Africa

Luftflotte 1 and 2 rail to Taranto ready for their journy to Africa next turn.
Allied turn
Not a great deal going on that I can see.
The damaged corps in Egypt and the garrison in Liverpool both repair to full stength.
Summary:

September 15, 1940 - Egypt invaded!
Good news..

Germany builds her 3rd General lab and Italy purchases Graziani (not a great leader but the best the Italians can get!)
UK start of turn

The Highseas fleet leaves port and bombards Liverpool removing 1 step off of the garrison. Uboat flotilla's 1 and 2 block either end of the Irish sea to keep the BB safe. Flotilla 2 docks in cardiff.
Luftflotte 3,4 and 5 knock another 5 steps off the Liverpool garrison and reduces their effectivness to 0, all fof no loss allowing 9 Korps to easily storm the city. 27 Korps advances north.
7 Motorised repairs to full strength and 16 Panzer moves to London. Next turn both these units will transfer back to France.
2 and 17 Korps move so as to take more land in England.....I'm not sure if this is important or not but it feels important to make sure all hexes are German owned!
UK at end of turn

Africa theatre

The 1st and 3rd Italian fleets bopmbared the front UK Corps unit inflictiing 4 step loses. 3 Panzer Korps with Rommel at their head lands and eliminates the corps for the loss of 2 steps.
The Italian armoured corps and fighter group also make landfall with the remainder of their ground forces in Africa advancing.
The German Infantry (still in sea transports) move to behind the 8th army looking to cut their supply when they land.
Luftflottes 1 and 2 embark for Africa.
Africa at end of turn

With neither rail points used 10 and 13 Korps who have both been posted in France all through Sealion transfer east.
Allied turn
The 8th army launches a counter attack!
UK armour knocks 5 steps off of the Italian motorised infantry and loses a step itself.

Ironically, it's best to take a FEW hexes as possible as long as England (and Russia later) is active. The reason is that partisans will appear only in hexes that you control, and by leaving as much enemy territory in their "control" as possible, it limits where partisans show up, thus making it easier to deal with them.Horseman wrote:2 and 17 Korps move so as to take more land in England.....I'm not sure if this is important or not but it feels important to make sure all hexes are German owned!

Partisans are merely an annoyance I think. Their biggest annoyance is that it means you have to leave a few units behind in the UK to deal with them when they (very occasionally) pop up. If you're still fighting in Russia '44 then they start to pop up with a distractingly high frequency, but still relatively easily dealt with.
October 5, 1940 - The British 8th army is all but destroyed defending Africa
1st order of buisness is to build my 12th German lab, my 3rd air. Thats maxed them out until my war effort increases a bit.
In the UK Luftflottes 5, 4 and 3 bombard Edinburgh reducing the Garrison there to 5 steps. 1 entrenchment and 27 effectiveness. No loses were incurred.
9 and 27 Korps succede in taking the city losing 2 and 1 steps respectively.
16 Panzer Korps and 6 Motorised Korps board sea transports ready to land in France next turn. 7 Panzer rails to London ready to join them. 2 Korps rails to Edinburgh to help complete the conquest whilst 17 Korps and Uboat flotilla 2 repair to full strength.
The Highseas fleet docks in Liverpool and Uboat flotilla's 1 and 3 head into the Atlantic.
The Uk

Africa at start of turn

Despite only having an effectiveness of 37 the Italian fighter attacks the UK Armour, there are no loses on either side but the armours effectivness is slightly reduced and more importantly their entrechment is gone.
The 3rd Italian fleet bombards the UK corps unit causing no loss but taking their entrenchment out as well. 4 Korps lands and forces the UK corps to retreat with 4 steps lost for none of their own. 19 Motorised lands and finnishes the job losing 1 step.
A tank melee erupts as 3 Panzer attacks the UK armour losing 2 steps and killing 6, forcing the UK armour to retreat. 10 Italian corps destroys the last of the UK armour losing 1 step of their own.
Graziani deploys to 20 Motorised corps and all other Italian units advance.
The 3 sea transports move further along the Egyptian coast ready to land next turn with the Italian fleet in support.
Africa at end of turn

Allied Turn
Nothing that I can see going on!
Summary:
Port Said should fall in the next couple of turns, that will leave my African forces free to invade Syria and Iraq (and its oil)
From there I'm not sure what I'll do with my African units...they may not be able to make it back to Europe in time for Barbarossa, bit then again they might be in time for a "reserve"
Once Syria is taken I should be able to knock out the UK carrier based there leaving (afaik) only 1 UK BB in the Med, that does not worry me too much as theres not a great deal that 1 ship can do so the Italian fleet will probably move to help in the Atlantic.
In the UK once Glasgow is taken I'll send 2 corp units to Ireland and leave 1 or 2 on the mainland to garrison London and Glasgow. I will use the Luftwaffe and Highseas fleet to complete the conquest of the whole of Ireland including the south so I can use the port to bring 1 Korps back to garrison Liverpool (leaving 1 in ireland) I'm not sure if 4 corps units are too many to hold the UK and I might miss them in Barbarossa but I dont want to leave England too lightly held like last game. Taking Ireland gives my bombers a slightly better range into the Atlantic.

Funny you should say that. Whilst studying the map a bit closer I was thinking Iran looked like a good bet for more oil.....and another route into Russia, nothing like attacking from a direction they're not expecting. Just so long as the Russians don't have too many troops starting over there.......most of the Africa Korp are made up of Italians!OzHawkeye wrote:If you're looking for something for your victorious Afrika Corp to do after Iraq, take down Iran (more oil), then swing north into the Caucasus for even more good oil...hehe.

The AI tends to keep the odd garrison unit hanging around, but nothing that'll hold up the Afrika Corp (Italian or otherwise) for very long, and it's buku oil in Baku for sure.Horseman wrote:Funny you should say that. October 25, 1940 - The Axis forces grow
Great news from German and Italian scientists

Italy builds a naval lab focused on surface ships.
Germany purchase another fighter unit.
In the UK Luftflotte 3 upgrades whilst Luftflotte's 4&5 rebase to Liverpool using rail movement and are now in range of Glasgow and Ireland.
2, 9 and 27 Korps advance on Glasgow. 17 Korps heads to london to act as a garrison.
16 Panzer and 6 Motorised Korps land in France, 7 Panzer ships to Hague.
All 3 Uboat Flotillas sail deeper into the Atlantic looking for targets of oppurtunity.
Africa at start turn

3 Panzer Korps and 20 Italian Motorised corps both repair damage. The remaing forces advance on Cairo and Port Said. There is a UK Garrison unit in Cairo and the Egypian army (Garrison unit) in Port Said. The Italian 3rd Fleet bombards the Egyptian army but only manages to reduce its entrenchment by 1. The remaining ships hold position to hopefully build effectivness.
Africa after Axis movemont

Germany's new tac bomber deploys in Vienna.
Allied turn
German high command welcome 2 new allies

Sumary:
The Balklands campaign should be ready to start by the end of the year. With Hungary and Romania now in the war Germanys PPs should increase nicely and its time to focus on my Barborossa build up. In the games 1941 scenario Germany has 10 corps units, 4 motorised, 4 armoured, 2 fighter and 2 tac bombers on the eastrn front (as well as the axis minors) I'll use this as a bench mark and aim to have at least this (preferably more) I will also hope to have some tech increases in place and a few more leaders!
And of course I will be taking OzHawkeye's advice and hopefully the "Africa Korps" will be going into Russia via the caucusus
