Legacy Oleh Dir indeed
Woah, Shadow Dir is scary. Definitely less effective, though. I pair mine with a Hit and Run hero (no retaliation from units with lower initiative when attacking), so the +2 initiative is important to me.

Speaking of heroes: Kerensky, Kerensky, what are you doing with your Zero Slots heroes? I'm desperate to know. I would probably spend them all on 6 slot artillery to feel like I'm getting maximum benefit from each hero, then wrap my playstyle around having all those giant tubes on the field, but I'm curious what better players ( or even players less enslaved to unexamined "optimization" ) would do.

I only use a single 21cm with zero slot. To have more than one is really wasteful I think. I get why people play that way, but I think it's too much of an old PG or PzC doctrine. The slow plodding advance, just blasting your way through the enemy in a full frontal assault. Don't get me wrong, I think it works in the base game, where most of your obstacles come from very heavily defended static positions you have to just grind your way through.

But in the DLC, the emphasis has shifted somewhere more in the direction of mobility. There are a lot more enemies that move around, roaming patrols or dedicated counterattackers, and having large amounts of heavy support units is clumbersome to use against these enemies. I was running to a problem where I didn't enough any tanks or infantry to directly confront the enemy, too much artillery and aircraft. Too many disablers, not enough finishers.

I ran into this problem in the main game in Kharkov 42. That is the first scenario of the base campaign where there are a lot of Soviet attackers, and your arty based force is really not suited to that kind of battle.

So I put the three 0 slots into one arty, one infantry (welcome home Godzilla), and one panzer. I think all four reduced slot heroes are all in panzer units. I definitely roll with more Panzers than any other unit type. I think the current roster is something like 3-4 infantry, 7 Panzer, 3 recon, 2 AT, 4 arty, 1-2 AD, 3 fighter, 1 tactical, 1 strat bomber.

I'm a big fan of being mobile, and making encirclements, so I need a lot of powerful OS mobile forces that can stand up to direct contact with strong enemies (hello there Hannut) while I fight to encircle and destroy them. Because I do like encirclements, and put the one trait I do like using to excellent use. Spoils of War keeps my prestige at healthy levels on Generalissimus and keeps a huge stockpile of captures always at my disposal so I rarely need to worry about running out of part of choice tanks like the S35 or Char B.

I generally don't play around with the General trait system, taking 'not very harmful' negatives to really power inflate with power positive picks is trickery I'm not a fan of. But I am my own 'Panzer General' lower slot costs now with this cadre of reduced slot heroes, heh.

Turns out 1 random hero per enemy has an unexpected side effect.

Some of those heroes can land on 'prestige per turn' which lets the AI get a bit more prestige than usual to repair units.

Made a huge impact on Dunkirk when the AD and trucks starting repairing bomb damage, much to my surprise. Definitely did NOT get every bonus objective from that battle! :(
