Rommel Difficulty: General Advice?

Yes, that's my plan for Rommel. I am going with a very small core, I am not buying any infantry, tanks, or fighters. The only units I am buying are artillery, 88s, tactical bombers and strategic bombers, There are so many good special hero units awarded in the infantry, tanks and fighter categories along with the captured units so there is no need to buy anything.

That's the way to do it... the only thing might be that some units don't arrive in time...
