But think about it. It was one of the main reasons that the camping attitude did not create any problem back then. Also, it was realistic (historical speaking)..Omg, i miss so much FoG1...
Is it still around and playable? And is there any community for it still?

My dear friend,
Sadly the "update" of FoG1 in Unity in fact destroyed the game. There are still some players who play the game (look at the forum for fog1http://www.slitherine.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=84 ) but since slitherine sells the non-working unity version it is truly hard now to enjoy the game. You have to ask them to give you the installer for the older version. The unity version does not deserve any money...sorry but this is true.
For Byzantium!!

Regardless, people still camped then. They just did weird stuff like turning their shock troops' back to the enemy or going to horde tactics (which I detest) using masses of non-shock units. Anarchy charges were a real concern in history, but I think not as common as they occured in-game. Despite some problems I have with FOG II, it is still superior to FOG I, particularly the graphics.

I never played FOG1, but even without anarchy charge rules in FOG2, they still happen...

Because of the player (especially me when I first started) :D

"That Balearic slinger unit is really pissing me off, biting chunks out of my cavalry. Chaaarge, boys!"

Which often ends poorly.

Most here are discussing the characteristics of cavalry rather than their use.......and that information will also be very useful to the OP.

I use Light Cavalry to scout, harass, and confuse my opponent. Try not to have them trapped in a static situation. Keep them to the Flanks

Heavy cavalry are good as shock troops in some situations. However trapped too long in a static situation undermines their true value, which is mobility.

Threatening flanks seem to me to be the best and most productive use of Cavalry. Their mobility is their value.

You should read some articles about Alexander and his use of Cavalry.

I use all units opportunistically as seems fit. Which is of course too general to be practical advice, but just saying.

Relative to its raw fighting power, Cavalry is overpriced, because you have to pay extra for the speed. That is the fundamental reason why is it difficult to use it efficiently; but if the other units in your list are crappy, you have no choice but to load up on Cavalry and try some fancy maneuvering.

You could give the cavalry one of the three options but there was still a chance that they would ignore the order.

Yes, i agree. Use the cavalry as a fist against the enemy cavalry with the hope to win and use it after for flank and rear attacks.

This would be the historical use. However, in FoG2 it´s a bit difficult to pull off a Cannae, because
1. Cavalry is not that fast.
2. A cavalry sweep can be too easily frustrated with lights.

the alt gameplay mod does a lot to address this if you ever had any interest in checking that out. Cavalry can fall back further, and impose secondary zoc loss on non-light infantry by charging them, plus lots of other stuff: http://www.slitherine.com/forum/viewtop ... 92&t=99967

Mod sounds interesting. It´s a rather fundamental rebalancing, though, while what I had in mind were more like a few incremental changes. :)

Yes, this is correct. I would also add that cavalry become much more dangerous in the second half of a battle where formations might be starting to break up and there are isolated and damaged targets available to attack. So I always ask myself if I can hold some, or all, of my cavalry back as a genuine reserve.

Yes to this. It is as the battle develops and the cracks start to appear that cavalry can become the ancient panzers. Flanks are ideal but those wavering units are also good targets to break open the line.

Frontally attacking well formed, confident infantry is typically not the task of cavalry in history or FOG2.

That is perfectly clear, if we are talking about heavy and (most) medium infantry. However, cavalry should be strong against light infantry. In FoG2 it isn´t, really.
