Re: Second Time Control check this Sunday 8th November . . .
I have just finished the Second Time Control check and everyone has been given a pass. I have been a bit concerned about slow play in some divisions this season, particularly in one or two of the "A" divisions, and I did remove one player at the first Time Control check for slow play.
If you look at the latest league tables published today, you will see that there are a number of players who have not yet posted 3 results in each division they have entered. So I am going to go through each example and explain why they have got a pass. I don't normally do this, but as slow play seems to be creeping in at the edges of the tournament I think it is time for me to be crystal clear on the subject. Obviously I don't want to run a league with draconian measures where players are constantly looking over their shoulders to see if I am coming - and, of course, this is a hobby that we play for fun, but without a certain amount of monitoring (and rules to back it up, if necessary) then things can gradually become unmanageable and we will lose players who get frustrated with slow play, no-shows and abandoned matches. You only have to look at the bottom end of the tables in the automated tournaments to see what can happen.
So, this is what the tables showed me this morning . . .
Classical Antiquity
Division A
klayeckles - 2 matches completed, receives exemption because he has played in the Themed Event and I only require 2 completed matches from him
Late Antiquity
Division A
nyczar - 1 match completed, also entered Classical Antiquity (3 matches completed) and Biblical (5 matches completed), so if I count them all up 3+1+5=9, which equals the requirement of 3 matches per section, so this is a "pass".
Questar17 - 2 matches completed, also entered Classical Antiquity (3 matches completed), 3+2=5 which is one below the target of 6; normally starts tournaments slowly and I am satisfied there are other matches in progress so this is a borderline "pass".
Triarii - 2 matches completed, receives exemption as played in the Themed Event.
sunnyboy - 2 matches completed, also entered Early Middle Ages (3 matches completed), 3+2=5 which is one below the target of 6; normally starts tournaments slowly and I am satisfied there are other matches in progress so this is a borderline "pass".
Division B
batesmotel - 2 matches completed, also entered Classical Antiquity (3 matches completed) and Biblical (3 matches completed), 2+3+3=8, which is one below the target of 9; normally starts tournaments slowly and I am satisfied there are other matches in progress so this is a borderline "pass".
Division C
edb1815 - 2 matches completed, receives exemption as played in the Themed Event.
Division E
snooky51 - 2 matches completed, receives exemption as played in the Themed Event.
random27 - 2 matches completed, also entered Classical Antiquity (4 matches completed), Early Middle Ages (4 matches completed) and Biblical (8 matches completed), 2+4+4+8=18, which is six more than the target of 12 and is a clear "pass".
Early Middle Ages
Division A
Macedonczyk - 2 matches completed, only entered one section and has previous good record, so this is a borderline "pass".
Sennacherib - 0 matches completed, exemption as only just joined the section as a late replacement.
Triarii - 1 match completed, only needs to complete 2 as played in Themed Event, also entered Classical Antiquity (5 matches completed) and Late Antiquity (2 matches completed), 1+5+2=8 which is 2 more than target of 6 and is a clear "pass".
So you can see from all this that no-one is badly in breach of the targets and just a few players are one completed match short of it. There is no-one who has gone AWOL as far as I can tell and I am not getting any complaints. But if you were wondering about the Time Control checks then this is how I do them. They are real checks, not just words I put up to try and nudge people along. If you read the Players' Guide I do recommend that players try to play evenly across the sections they have entered rather than, say, playing all your Classical Antiquity matches first, then all your Early Middle Ages, or whatever.

Division C
Aetius39 (Andalusian) defeats Warg1 (Arab Conquest) 63-58
Close, exciting, and wild game up to the end, the Andalusians barely scraped by at the last moment. The score was roughly even, from the beginning until it finished, with each side trading blows; the Arabs hitting hard on their right side, while the Andalusians doing the same on theirs. Warg1 played great, and it really was up in the air until the very end, where if one unit regained cohesion he probably would have won. Great game!^^

Re: Conteshard has won Early Middle Ages Division D!
thanks! it was superb fun even playing with an army I don't feel completely at ease with (in Digital FOG: I've played the same army on tabletop wargames and I do like it a lot there
) but it performed way better than anticipated.
as usual is great to play with gamers all around the world and if anyone want to do a friendly battle (FOG2 or Sengoku), drop me a PM.

Division E
rs2excelsior (Samnite 355-272 BC with Etruscan 330-280 BC allies) beat Barrold713 (Seleucid 302-301 BC with Lysimachid 320 BC allies) 65-49
Last season I was on the other side of a matchup between a pike army and the Samnites, and it was a bloody slog that ended with the scattered remnants of each army desperately trying to push the other over the break threshold. This time was no different. I deployed my Samnites more heavily weighted to a patch of rough ground on my left, with my imitation legionnaires and hoplites trailing back on the open ground to the right. The Seleucid and Lysmachid pikes, understandably, didn't make an effort to engage the Samnites on the rough ground. While an attack against medium foot into rough terrain would have been suicidal for the phalanxes, it did allow the Samnite left to break through the token medium forces deployed against them and wrap around the Seleucid right. On my own right flank my cavalry couldn't hold up against the Xystophoroi and Iranian horse, but my hoplites and remnants of my cavalry fought valiantly to hold them off from the rest of the force. The formidable Seleucid elephant force (four units of elephants!) was sent off by a combination of shooting, hoplites, and flank attacks without being able to do too much damage. The phalanxes ground forwards and shattered much of the center of my line, but in the end the Samnite forces pushing around and aggressively exploiting the flanks of the now separated pikes tipped it, and a fragmented phalanx breaking caused the Seleucid army to lose heart and flee.
The battlefield at the end: Very well played - I predicted a bloodbath and the battle most definitely delivered! I feel you should have gotten a point out of this fight, as close as it was. Good game and I'll see you next time!
