Karvon's Kyrenean Greeks are fighting Hari72's Sarmations next.

The Greeks took up a defensive position anchored on some rough and two woods. The Sarmations cautiously advanced led by screening lights. After some hot skirmishing, with the Greeks coming out a little ahead, the Sarmation surviving lights fell back on their awaiting lancers and decided they would not attempt to force the Greek position. As we had no intention of moving out into the plains where the lancers might flank us, we agreed on a draw.

Karvon's Sarmatian 350 BC - 24 AD Defeated By Holien Rhoxolani 350 BC - 24 AD 27% to 52%

A good open area for a Cavalry fight with the best terrain on the Sarmatian side who had a small hill on their left flank. The map was divided by a small stream that ran across it. The Rhoxolani deployed in a long line with their irregular infantry on the right to secure that flank with the rough ground to their front.

Of course, no plan survives contact and the Sarmatian force had deployed on mass on their right flank near a large section of wood leaving the hill and their left flank unguarded.

The Rhoxolani were going to be crushed by the concentrated Lancers of the Sarmatian force so made a mad dash away from them towards the hill and closer to their supporting infantry. It was no surprise to see the woods near the Sarmatian force was teaming with light infantry who were now in the wrong position to rain down fire on the redeploying Rhoxolani and set off in chase as did their irregular infantry who were also deployed on the rear line well away from the hill.

The Rhoxolani gained the hill first and the eager Sarmatian cavalry outpaced their supporting lights and infantry and paid a heavy price.

Towards the end the light infantry of the Sarmatians were exacting a heavy toll on the Rhoxolani cavalry but it was too late the damage had been done and a victory won…

A fair fight and interesting Cavalry on Cavalry action.

Woods blocked off much of our right flank. Several woods divided the left edge from the center. A large rough patch lay in the center on the Samnite side of the field.

We deployed one command of horse archers on our left and three on our right, with our light foot screening opposite the central rough.

The Samnites deployed off to our left using the woods and rough to help cover the flanks. Their horse formed up as a reserve to help shield their left and rear.

We trotted our left horse and lights forward and began raining arrows on the Samnite foot once in effective range. On our right, we swept wide to avoid the rough and began to threaten his horse with our superior numbers.

A few rounds of point-blank arrow fire prompted the Samnites to charge all along the front, drawing his horse away from his infantry and his foot away from the protection of the rough. We regrouped and concentrated our fire on more isolated units. His horse we shredded up pretty quickly and saw off after flanking most of them. A couple of our horse got trapped while pursuing and died after a few rounds of valiant fighting surrounded.

However, once a number of his units were worn down by archery, we were able to ride them down, leading to more isolated units and flanking attacks. With his horse gone, we turned his left and fell on flanks and rears, and the Samnites gave up and fled for home.
