TomoeGozen(Macedonians) defeats deeter(Indians) 40 - 5.
Points (I think) :
TomoeGozen 95
deeter 5
The Indian shooting was ineffective with almost the entire Macedonian army getting into contact with the squishy Indians without cohesion damage. After that it was messy very quickly. Very tough for the Indians on a flat open battlefield.
Thanks to deeter for the game.

Re: There Can Be Only One! - Round 4
A very Alexander-like victory here! Yes if the Indian are out in the open with no rough or hill, it is very hard to beat pikes. Let's see what happens in the next battle, so we can find out which "friends" aren't very friendly anymore...^^TomoeGozen wrote: ↑Sat Apr 03, 2021 9:10 pm TomoeGozen(Macedonians) defeats deeter(Indians) 40 - 5.

Let the back-stabbing commence
Re: There Can Be Only One! - Round 4
In the match between SawyerK and snooky51 the Macedonians again won but by a very different score, 61-44. The Indians had two areas of rough ground on either side of the center and snooky51 promptly moved his archers into both segments, firing on the pikes as they moved down the field. The Macedonians used theophoroi to clear the rough ground on their left flank but the heavy arrow fire from the right flank broke a phalanx and damaged another. The Macedonian pikes quickly eliminated the archery units in the Indian center, as well as an elephant, but several of their theophori were trampled by an elephant from the left flank in their attempt to move across the center to get to the rough ground on the right. To add to the difficulty, the broken elephant several moves later rallied to disrupted and engaged the sole theophori unit to make to the rough ground on the Macedonians right flank. The theophoroi took the elephant in the flank but on the subsequent turn the elephant rallied (in the rough ground in contact with spears) to undamaged while the theophoroi disrupted. The following turn the theophoroi fragmented and broke. And that is a good example of how difficult a victory this was for the Macedonians.
My compliments to snooky51 on a well executed strategy that seriously damaged my army. Best of luck to both of the remaining players!

Re: There Can Be Only One! - Round 4
FINAL: ROUND 5 - Battle of Ipsos (Civil War)
After India bent the knee, acknowledging Alexander as the superior in battle, the Great One retired to his capital, Babylon. For some time he enjoyed being Emperor of the known world, but as was his nature, he began to tire of idleness. Ruling over the known world was not good enough; there were unknown parts left to explore, to conquer! But, as he began to prepare his armies to once again set forth, tragedy struck. Alexander, god-emperor, had struck ill and was dying...
All the most important people of the realm gathered by his side. Alexander's son too young, many hoped to be named regent, which of course was just one step from being Emperor themselves. This would not be hard to accomplish...but who, who would be named to look after the Empire? Many hoped to be called, but everyone knew in reality it was down to 2 men, 2 demi-gods themselves, who had time and again outshone all others in achievements and grandeur:
TomoeGozen and snooky51.
Suddenly it was time. Alexander called them both to his side. He looked at one, and then another. The Great King held out his hands, and both TomoeGozen and snooky51 took one hand into theirs. Then, silence. Alexander had closed his eyes, and said nothing.
Finally, the Emperor's chamberlain spoke up. "Sire, please tell us. Who will rule in your stead? Who will take your place atop this great Empire?"
And so Alexander opened his eyes, looked once and TomoeGozen, and then once at snooky51. Then he closed his eyes for the last time. Smiling, almost laughing, he cried:
To the strongest! There can be ONLY ONE!"

Beautifully written! I curse the day my bones were left to whiten in Greece.

Re: There Can Be Only One! - Final Round
The world is mine!
All that time following Alexander around paid off in the end
General-King TomoeGozen triumphs over his most worthy opponent(and ex friend and ally..) Snooky51 at the battle of Ipsos , the final scores being TomoeGozen(Seleucids) beats snooky51(Antigonids) 66-32.
The difference maker was my cavalry I think. Early on I got a rout on my right flank and my victorious cavalry pursued in to the flank of an Antigonid pike block , disrupting it and then killing it soon after. After that it was quite hard for snooky to get back in to it as his line was now severely disrupted.
It was nearly turned around by a commando elephant sneaking through the forest and making a mess of my right wing though
Thanks to snooky for the game and for the fine partnership during the campaign.
Thanks to Aetius for organising and running a fun , interesting event.
cheers,
Dave.

And so the saga ends...TomoeGozen smites his former friend and ally. Stuffed and used as a coat rack, snooky51's smiling, frozen face serves as a warning for anyone else to challenge the mighty Emperor. He is...the ONLY ONE.
For now...
Because of course, he will eventually pass, and in another time, another person, perhaps, can rise up and become the ONLY ONE.
We shall see...

Well, that's it everyone, TCBOO 1 is finished, with TomoeGozen as the champion. Congrats!
Please feel free to give back any and all feedback or criticism you have from playing the tournament. You can pm me or post here.
I am thinking of starting TCBOO II sometime soon since the Digital League is finished. I have a few topics in mind, but again, feel free to pm or post here suggestions you'd like to see.
Thanks again everyone!

Re: There Can Be Only One! - Final Round
Thanks for organising this, it was fun and brought a new element to the game.
My suggestion for a future event would be to change the scoring system. At present it is quite normal for a losing player to score 40 or 50%, or possibly over 60% though that would be unusual. While for a low action draw the higher scoring player might easily get 20% or so or even lower. This means that in the early rounds a pair with two defeats could go through while another pair with a win and a draw could get knocked out.
This scoring system works fine for the DL, where the needs to be an incentive for players to attack. It is not necessary in paired matches where the incentive should be to outscore your direct opponents.
Would suggest a simple 'difference' scoring system. Each battle is scored + or - according to the difference between the two scores. So a 40-15 win would be scored at +25 for the winner and -25 for the loser. This would change the dynamic of the battles, players objective is now to do better than their opponents rather than to rack high scoring defeats even at the risk of a Pyrrhic victory. It might lead to some more passive play but I think to get through the early rounds at least one of the pair is going to need a good result.

Or even simpler (but with same dynamic) in order to just having to deal with additions and positive values within teams:tyronec wrote: ↑Tue Apr 20, 2021 8:45 am Thanks for organising this, it was fun and brought a new element to the game.

Each battle is scored according to each player's inflicted casualties, whether draw or not.
So a 40-15 win would be scored at +40 for the winner and +15 for the loser. And a 39-15 draw would be scored at +39 for the player inflicting 39 and +15 for the player inflicting 15.
