Div A

Karvon Venetian 1440-1500 AD defeated ulysisgrunt Florentine 1424 56 -16.

The armies met on a rather hilly field. A large, steep hill rose a bit beyond our central sector. Another smaller one lay beyond it.

We deployed a division of crossbowmen at the foot of the hill, screened by some of our light foot. We massed our light horse on the left, supported by the remainder of our light foot. Our knights deployed to the left behind our light screen, supported by a division of cavalry.

The Florentines deployed in a dense block in the center of the field. 4 Swiss pike keils formed their front with a pair of Swiss halbrediers forming up in the rear. Six knights followed up directly behind them.

We pushed our light on the left forward and wheeled towards the center once past the main hill. Our crossbows quickly scrambled up the slopes and deployed along the summit on the right side of the hill facing the Florentines. Our knights slowly made their way along the left side of the hills and then wheeled right to follow up our lights.

The Florentines marched straight down the middle of the field, passing wide of the central hill, and ignoring our troops initially.

Our lights fell in behind them and began a steady fire on the knights, eventually disrupting some of them. The Florentines opened the ranks of their foot, and the knights passed through to escape our fire. Our lights swung out wide and moved around his foot to continue harassing his knights. We sent a couple of our crossbows down the hill to help disrupt his knights. The rest of our crossbow shifted back down the hill to our left, planning to take up position on a smaller hill along the edge from which to shoot. One division of our knights swung wide of the Florentine foot, aiming to follow up and support our lights skirmishing with his knights. The other division reversed course and made its way back around the hill to support our shifting crossbows.

Our wide-ranging lights uncovered a couple of his light horse hidden behind some woods on the far right. In a short fight, we surrounded and saw these off with the support of some of our cavalry.

The Florentine knights got tired of the shooting and attempted to ride down our lights. This scattered them a bit, but they did catch and dispatched a couple. However, the rest surrounded and shredded them with concentrated point-blank fire.

The Swiss foot turned on my nearby crossbow, and one fragmented as it tried to back up the slope to safety. The other got away. I belatedly realized the fast moving Swiss would catch the crossbow I was moving across the open to the hill on the edge, so I headed away for some high ground and rough in the corner instead with the Swiss in hot pursuit. The fragmented unit got caught and broken, but my knights arrived and served as a screen to slow down most of the Swiss. This allowed time for my broken unit to rally and hobble off to safety.

One determined Swiss halbredier chased two of my crossbowmen into the corner of the field where we took up a position on a hill, partially in the rough. The Swiss chopped the one in the open to pieces quite quickly, then laid into the guy in the rough. That proved his undoing as his slower progress allowed one of my knights the time to ride to rescue and flank him, breaking him pretty quickly.

Meanwhile, the main body of the Swiss relentlessly hammered into my screening knights, slowly driving them back. this allowed time for my other knight division, cavalry and lights to slowly surround and harass them. One of the keils finally got disordered on charging our knights. We hit that one from the rear and fragmented it, then swept it away with other knights. We flanked and disordered another one, breaking that with subsequent follow up charges. Our light horse pursued the Swiss to ensure they had no chance to rally, and the Florentines folded.

Kroche Carthaginian 490-411BC w Greek 460 48% loss
drew against
Stones1985 Seleucid 166 BC to 125 BC with Parthian 55% loss

Quite hilly map which saw both the armies wheel so axis of facing changed from north/south to east/west. Carthaginians anchored their left flank on a hill as the heavy Seleucid foot moved to attack. Seleucid's had a hill of their own to offer their left protection to support their main advance against Carthaginian left. Initial clashes were through light units. Seleucids had an advantage in light horse and gave the Carthaginians light a bloody nose in the skirmishes between light foot in the centre. As the forces came together the Seleucids had a points advantage, but the more numerous Carthaginian heavy foot gained advantage in the centre and took the lead. Seleucid light forces remained a threat throughout and did well to help protect their remaining forces. At the end the match was as it started, but with fewer numbers, Seleucids had most of their lights remaining to harass the Carthaginians - flank charges stunting the Carthaginians advance and allowing remaining Seleucids to regroup. Both sides came close to victory but it ended a draw. GG

alexmike1 Arab (Umayyad) 685-750AD beat alexhstandish Visigothic 419-621 56-21

Both armies had hills on their own rights and the Visgoths held a ridgeline just ahead of the baseline. The first few turns were spent maneuvering for position. The goths sent a cavalry probe to sweep round the Arab hill, which then withdrew when most of the opposing cavalry force redeployed to face them. Eventually, the lines clashed and the Visigothic charge lacked its usual fervour (I was lucky on the impacts). This allowed the Arabs to find enough flanks to win the day.

Div C

alexhstandish (Anglo Irish) defeated dragmio (Polish) 46:17

The Anglo Irish feared a huge number of knight lancers so formed up on the right, and moved into two areas of rough terrain with light troops and longbowmen, adopting a north south line. The Polish army however consisted of mumerous crossbowmen and medium infantry so a tough fight ensued in the foremost rough terrain. Initially the Anglo Irish prevailed, with knights taking out bowmen and a prolonged archery contest taking place beteen crossbows and longbows.

Between the rough areas the battle was decided by a clash of spearmen and knights which the Anglo Irish managed to win.

Thanks for the game dragmio.

Division C

Chris Townsend's Spanish 900 with Andalusian allies defeated wcfcns' Byzantine 904 47 to 22.

The Byzantine somehow managed to bring a horse army by boat to the shores of Spain. On an otherwise open plain, the Spanish choose to anchor their line on some woods on each flank, and adopt a defensive stance with their mainly infantry force. Unfortunately,, with only 1400 points, there were gaps in the Spanish line, with some small gaps in their shield wall, and a larger gap between the Spanish and their Muslim allies on the left. The Byzantine plan was to exploit those gaps, particularly by aiming their Byzantine Klibanophoroi at the gap, and peppering the rest of my line with horse archers. Fortunately both the Spanish and the Muslims were well equipped with their own archers and skirmishers that gave as good as they got in the missile exchange. The Byzantine's did penetrate the central gap, but not in force, with successful individual units either being counter attacked by a cavalry reserve, or disappearing off map in pursuit of the baggage train. Meanwhile, a few Spanish cavalry emerged through gaps in the shield wall to lead the attack on the Byzantine medium cavalry that has been severely weakened by missile fire.

In the end, the Andalusian flank had almost collapsed, but the complete victory of the Spanish right flank decided the match, and the Byzantine reembarked and headed home.

Good game!

My opponent had his cavalry shot up from some woods well stocked with missile units. After his centre broke his army quickly folded. My opponent was initially hesitant about the map but decided to stick with it in the end. By his own admission he felt he had attacked prematurely and under estimated the damage my missile units were able to inflict. Nevertheless a good game. It's always hard to pull back from some early strategic errors as I know well myself..
