petergarnett wrote:Hopefully there are only a few battles from Fall left to finish & report.

We can then do the Winter & Spring phases (as there are no outstanding sieges I believe). This will consist of the following:-

1 Army maintenance for those who choice to keep any armies in the field.
2 BDM - I'm about to inform each player of the number & sex of eligible royal off-spring. Royal marriages can then be arranged to permanently cement countries together & to hopefully provide heirs for your royal lines.
3 Random event cards will be drawn & notified. These have to last until Summer so good luck selecting the right moment to play them.
4 Diplomacy - you can create any formal one year alliances, i.e. non-agression pacts
5 Build / Improve Cities and PR Events. However these will not be complete until Fall.

Then it's the Spring campaign turns.

One more player is able to join the campaign as well.
Is this a Winter and Spring phase, or a Winter phase followed by a Spring phase.? I know we don't fight in Winter, but I'm curious whether we tax once or twice.

BTW, the first time I read this, I thought Peter was talking about "edible royal off-spring." It pays to read twice.

I did know that but 'dour yorkist', 'yorkist tea' and 'yorkist ferrets' don't work as well as a dig at yorkshire - Opportunities to do this not usually being passed up on this side of the pennines.

Mind you Richard (the dad) Duke of York did have home in Wakefield didn't he?

FYI the Yorkists were not from Yorkshire, in fact they were rather unpopular in the North of England, at least until after the (very popular) Richard of Gloucester (later Dick the Shit) had been Edward IV's viceroy up there for some time. The Wars of the Roses were not a rivalry between Yorkshire and Lancashire, but between royal cousins of the Duchies of York and Lancaster. Not the same thing at all.

Incidentally, Edward IV and Richard III were the first English kings since 1066 to speak English as their native language. Their predecessors spoke French.
Did kings before 1066 speak english then? Just curious.
Thats a good question isn't it!
I suppose they spoke their native language - Saxon - (where King would be 'cyng' if I remember my Beowulf) and with at least some latin for some of the more religious/learned ones. Then there would be a couple who probably spoke old norse - Cnut and Hardacnut for example.
But I suppose there were only Kings of England (Rex Angolorum) - as opposed to English Kings - after Alfred in 830 or so.

It's Winter, siege resolution but I don't believe we have any, Spring phase, then we start campaign turns again.

I wish I'd been witty enough to put edible!

ahh, struck by the bold faced lightning bolts from Olympus

No worries, understand that squalling eligible , or edible heirs  , event cards etc might effect this, just getting head start before the official stuff starts

Sudden Demand for Wedding Venues

OK everyone will have had a PM from me about the Winter BDM (births deaths marriages) phase.

Basically each ruler has 1 to 4 edible members of the royal household. May be male, female or - actually no 3rd option I'm afraid - this is royally afterall.

You may choose to negotiate in public or private. Next winter we will be checking for births to a royal couple and also for deaths in the royal family.

I only need to know that a marriage has occurred and of any additional terms (beyond the wedding dowry of 500 paid by the bride's family).

One side benefit of having an heir (produced through royal marriage) is protection against revolt - if the king is over-thrown by the people they will select an heir to suceed him so you are not knocked out. I forgot to mention this on the PM.

Book of the Dead Read

Upon a successful reading of the fabled Book of the Dead we are pleased to annouce that Ianiow has been found alive but heavily bandaged. He now takes over as Carthage. CharlesRobinson has asked to leave due to lack of time to enjoy himself in the LW.

So welcome back Ian - nothing has changed - you still cannot trust anyone here :?

We are doing the Winter phase whilst the last few Fall battles are resolved.

News from Tuam

The Ard Ri of Tuam has sent heralds to all points of the compass to announce two pieces of news.

First
The coming of age of a rose of Tuam - Niamh O'Saisno.
She is pretty (but definitely exhausting). Male heirs of any Royal household are welcome to bid for her hand in marriage.

Second
The armies of Tuam currently in Mytilene will remain there over the winter ready to eject the Kappodokian interlopers in the coming spring campaigning season.

After careful consideration, the Morbian army in Calabria will remain in place until spring so that the retrieval of stolen land can begin at the earliest opportunity.

Let it be known that the good and wise King of Carthage CharlesRobinson has fallen mysteriously ill, and has entrusted me, Ianhotep of Rhodes, to be his Vizier until his return to health. A wise decision. I shall be available to receive embassies from my neighbours shortly.

So let it be written, so let it be done.

I have three digital daughters up for grabs at the Empire. They are driving me mad around the castle with their singing, loud young persons music, occupation of the phone and computer and .............Anyhow, I'm sure they would make fabulous wives to the eligible princes of LW. They are all incredible beauties, though very demanding and quite hard work.

The Emporer would also like to let it be known that he is open to recieving embassies.

More Weddings

Rome is please to be rid of more of its wayward scions

A Prince of Egyptus to marry the renowned Vibratta
A long toothed nomad girl of Armenia has stolen the heart of our fair son Sempronius Anginus (make sure the dowry is delivered at the alter!)

Tuam is pleased to announce

Tuam has renewed its alliance with Egypt (5) and Crimea (11).

A rose of Tuam; Niamh O'Siasno has been sent - with dowry of three crates of best whiskey and one bushel of ginseng - to marry a prince of the Delian Confederation (25). This alliance is renewed.

Tuam also announces a Declaration of War
As promised; The Anglo-Irish armies of Tuam will march - come spring - upon the muckrakers of Utopia via Crimea and Egypt.
This is in response not just to the propagation of scurrilous rumours regarding the military prowess of the forces of Tuam but also to liberate supplies of Glenfarclas.
The Glenfarclas, we are reliably informed, is styled 'whisky' and must be re-labelled 'whiskey'.
